I would like to purchase either a dvd drive or just a vcr dvd recorder.. my question is with like emersons and stuff like that, that u can get at wal mart can u rent a movie and pop it in and put it on dvd? Or are vhs copy protected like some dvds and is it usually new vhs's or? any help on this would be appreciated.

No you can not Just Pop in a retail VHS Tape and Record it to DVD unless you were able to get some sort of Firmware Hack that disabled the Macrovision Detection....

If you had a DVD Recorder and a VCR you could get a Video stabilizer that you Put in Between the VCR and DVD Recorder and it would filter out the Macrovision so you could record on to the DVD Recorder...

I still Find it better to use a PC though because with a $50 DVD Burner you can Copy any DVD you want and with a $75 Capture Card you can Record any VHS tape to your PC and Burn it to DVD which is Cheaper than a DVD Recorder and a Video stabilizer and when you Make DVD"S on your PC you get to Make your Own Menu"s and Chapters and do editing ect which you can"t do with a DVD DRecorder....

Ya thanks man, I was thinking about just purchasing a dvd burner drive for my comp u can gettum pretty cheap at wal-mart.. I have another question if ya wouldnt mind or to anyone else seeing this.. How do u get around the rip of a copy protected dvd cause my brother and I tried that on his comp and we couldnt figure it out.. someone said DVD Shrink but i will have to take it one step at a time and learn all of this.. p.s. whats the best discs to by any certain ones? .. also i have a burn program that came with my bros comp he gave me its Nero i think but i heard bad things about that.

Ok question.. DVD Shrink..ive heard of it.. basically ive been told i need this i have no idea what it is..every dvd i pop in my comp to upload onto my hard drive wont let me cause its copy protected. Sooo i need some tutorials here lol. .. like what is DVD Shrink , where do i get it, whats the best discs to use.. someone needs to teach me.. im a young jedi that knows nothing lol Also how does a capture card work .does it hook up to your vcr?

Crash, I don't burn original movies so Minion will be able to help you. Basically you require A DVD ripping software, which will copy an original movie to your computer, and then using DVDShrink you can burn it onto another DVD to make a copy. DVD shrink is esentially a program that would take a large movie (which all seem to be anyway) and shrink it to a 4.7gb DVD.
Actually come to think of it DVD Shrink will rip and burn.

Hi, If you want to Copy Retail Store Bought DVD"s then you need to First use a DVD ripper that can Bypass the Copy protection....

"DVD-Shrink" comes with a Basic DVD ripper that Can Bypass the Most Common Copy protection schemes but something that can rip every DVD is something like "ANYDVD" or "DVD Fab Decryptor"....

Once the DVD has Been Ripped to your HD you can use DVD-Shrink on the Ripped DVD and it will Rip out the Foreign audio Tracks and special Features to make the DVD small enough to Fit on a DVD and Format it all to a "Video_TS" Folder which you just Burn to DVD...

If you go into the Guides section you might Find a DVD-Shrink Guide there....

Rjessa: What Type of Capture device sort of Depends on a few Things, Like how much money you want to spend which directly relates to what type of Quality you want from your Captures....

Generally a good device to get is one that uses Hardware Compression so your PC doesn"t have to do the Work of Compressing the Video....

Something like the "Hauppague WinTV PVR 150" or the "ATI Tul Theater 550" both will Capture your Video to your HD in High quality MPEG-2 format that can be authored directly to DVD without any Further Compression.....

Thanks I would like to get really good quality, and would also prefer to use USB rather then PCI card, (no slots available). So after capture I author it using DVDlab and burn using Nero. Right?

Well USB will Cost more and will be More Problematic as USB has Bandwidth issues when Transfering video....

Even the Most Barebone Motherboards have at least 3 PCI slots so if yours are Filled up you Might consider Removeing one of them to accomidate the PCI card as USB devices are troublesome but if you are intent on a USB device a Guess the "Hauppague WinTV PVR USB" is supposed to be a Good one but don"t get it Confused with the "Hauppague WinTV USB" which is a terrorable device....

I do have 4 PCI slots as follows: PCI Express x16(1), 2 PCI Slots (PCI Slot1 & PCI Slot2); lastly PCI Slot Express x1 (which is a very small slot (What is this used for?). So if what you say is true then perhaps I will remove one of the cards and use it for the Video capture since it is I who requires a good vedio signal. So what is the PCI product called?

You can also get Cards that will work in a PCI-Express 1X slot(The Small one) But they are not very Common Yet...

A Good PCI Capture Card with Hardware Compression is the "Hauppague WinTV PVR 150" or the "ATI Theater 550" both of which are under $100 and produce Good Quality Captures in Mpeg-2/DVD Format....
