I have read alot of the posts but to be totally honest, I cannot make much sense out of the info...I record alot of video (movie) and wish to have the media acceptable to as wide a range of players as possible. So far I have been using Maxell's or Sony brands with no problems. (get them when they are on sale at Wal Mart)but lately these brands have not been in stock in anything but 25 or 50 packs and I prefer the 100 spindles where the best savings can be had. I have seen Verbatim DVD-R in Business Depot etc in 100 spindles but I had thought that I heard at one time Verbatim were no good...gawd knows the price of that 100 spindle at Business Depot was nasty...$70 Cdn! I have looked at all the big retailers around with no luck and my blanks are getting low, so was wondering where to turn (purchase online...and from whom...what brands are good). I use an LG GSA-4163B burner and the manual recommends Maxell, Taiyo Yuden and JVC brands. I have never seen these infamous Taiyo Yuden variety or many JVC's for that matter either....any help would be appreciated...

Your burner supports booktyping. If I were you, I would only purchase DVD+ media and booktype it DVD-ROM for maximum playability in stand alone DVD players. Note that you can't booktype DVD- media.

Verbatim is top notch. So is Taiyo Yuden. Check out the link below.

what is booktyping? I checked out that link, but of course anywhere where there is really good prices...don't have an option to ship to Canada. Trying to find a good deal on media up here somewheres...also think my LG is kicking the bucket..several coasters in a row now. So am looking at a replacement drive, want a good dependable burner, was looking into the Benq 1655, since have heard that that brand makes the most dependable and durable burners. If anyone has any links to Canadian sites that have good prices etc, I would love the heads up, thanks.

Have you checked to make sure the firmware on your burner is up to date. This can cause problems with media and burning. You can do this through the Nero Info Tool, or DVD Decrypter. Then check at this site to make sure.

Here is an explanation of booktype/bitsetting of DVD's.

TY's are rated the best media, then I think Verbatim.

I've used Verbatim w/ much success...

I only buy -R media, for compatibilty reasons w/ older dvd players.

Just get -R disc's so that you don't have to booktype.

Not sure where you're at in canada, but there's an online retailer located in Kitchener, ON, with good prices and quality, they do sell Taiyo Yudens and alot of other good things....

They're pretty good, I've never had a problem with them.

I broke down and got a Costco membership after I seen they carried TDK DVD-R's. $47 for 100....not too bad and they are a good quality. I had checked out blankmedia and I may try a shipment from them in the future, but for now Costco isn't too bad.

In my experience the TDK printables found at Costco are of poor quality. This disc you will find will pause during the last 40min or so of a recorded movie. I also experienced random pixelation. I'd say you would do better to locate a retailer that sells either Verbatim or SONY DVD-R or +R disc. While the TDK are at a good price they not worth the hassle. If you have a Sam's Club in your area they carry Verbatim disc also at a reasonable price. With these you won't have to deal with bad recordings caused by bad media. They normally carry 50 pack spindles for $14.99 and the white hub printables as well as standard silver Verbatims for an every day low price of $39.99

Personally I would stay away from TDK media. I would look for verbatim, taiyo yuden, maxell mij, or sony and since your drive is capable of bitsetting I would go with the +r format. Dvd-rom is more compatable than even DVD-R and it's no hasle on most drives capable of bitsetting to booktype DVD+R media to dvd-rom. Most of them you can set it to booktype dvd-rom and forget it.
