I am having some small issues with backing up my stripped DVD movies to DVD+R DL disks.

I just started to get into DL burning and tried to search and read, but it made my head spin:)/

I have a HTPC and media server, so I have about 200 DVDs and have just gotten started to back them up and for menuless watching at the GF's. The <4.3GB ones are the ones being burnt to DVD+R DL. Smaller ones to single layer DVD+Rs.

I have been burning DL DVD movies and test playback on a denon DVD player has been "iffy". I cannot rewind, the DVD seems to freeze though Fast Forward does not seem to have problems, when frozen I have to hit stop and start over. Also it seems I have a minor layer skip going on.

My ripping and burning process.

1. Ripped DVDs with DVDShrink (file mode w/o TS folders) @ 100% quality and 1GB vobs. I ripped with decrypter if DVDShrink had problems, then strip/combine with DVDShrink after (DVDShrink just has a better UI for me).

2. Burned files with Nero 6.6 in DVD_Video complilation. No errors and ok burning with Sony DRU-720A and Ridata DVD+R DL disks.

Conclusions after reading through some of these forums.

1. Nero has problems with DVD DL layer breaks.

2. I should probably be burning with imgburn using ISO files

3. If nero is to be used set book-type to DVD-ROM

Questions that I would like addressed if possible

1. Does nero have layer break issues burning ISOs on DL disk? I would guess so, seems like it is a burning flaw and not a file structure flaw.

2. Since I have many disks already in IFO/vob format, what would be the best way to burn them? Can I create ISO from them with DVDShrink and them Burn with imgburn? Or is there a better app for this, possibly one that burns files in DVD TS folder format with out the problems described above???

3. If I can use Nero, is using the DVD_Video compilation the correct one or should I be using another?

4. What book type setting to I use for the best compatibility with using dvddecrypter/imgburn? On Nero is was pretty obvious... DVD-ROM. With imgburn, there isn't a Sony option and none of them have a DVD-ROM setting.

Essentially I am trying different stuff but if I can save some bad copies with advise I would appreciate it. As I type I am trying to burn a DVDShrink created ISO file with Nero 6.6 using DVD-ROM book type... I hope to at least fix the Rewind issue with this...

Thanks much

With my limited experience, I've seen no noticable difference between using -R and +R DL. One advantage some see is that +R DL can be booktyped to ROM and some burners even do it automatically. I noticed some of the Sony drives booktype, so that should be of interest to you.

VOBs are usually part of the VIDEO_TS folder which holds the IFO, BUP, and VOB files that comprise a DVD. You're talking about DVD compliant MPEG 2.

Booktyping has nothing to do with burning, except that's when the files are written. DVD ROM is the universal format for DVD players. So, theoretically, if you booktype to DVD ROM all players should play the recorded disc if you have compliant files. Play, not burning, is the issue. It's also a niche situation as most players play at least -R and/or +R besides ROM. Few players can be found that only play DVD ROM. If a person doesn't have a burner that booktypes to ROM and has such a player, it is cheaper to buy a player than get a new burner that booktypes. If a person has booktyping ability, there's no reason not to use it though. As for the setting, once set the drive normally uses the selected booktype as the default. Even the freeware DVDInfoPro can be used to set booktyping if the drive has the capability.

As for myself, I've never had a problem with ISO or File modes in burning. ISO is sort of like DVD ROM for players, it's more universally used in burning apps. Notice DVD Decrypter and it's newer counterpart, ImgBurn, only burn in ISO. In case you hadn't noticed, inside ISO is a VIDEO_TS folder with all the files I mentioned before. ISO is dealt with more as a continuous stream, whereas software logs the individual segments when doing things in File mode (same material, just handled slightly different). Some of the DL problems have been addressed in the Nero 7, so you may want to try the trial from Nero.com to see how it works for you. Then if you still have layer break problems, shop around. A friend of mine even said he had DL problems with DVD Decryter and Imgburn.
