divx player has a good encoder i think and then once it has encoded it and you are ready to burn it again at good quality you just run it through Nero vision express 2 and that will get all the quality good again when it is encoded it should be about 700 mb whichs is small compared to a DVD movie :)

OKAY I have tried DVX and other programs and can get the movies to under 1gb.. I do not care about the menus and extras and I am just compressing the main movie.. I have a few movies I obtained from a friend they are the full movie and no extras the file size is 280mb on one and 480mb on the other with no loss of quality.. they are in rmvb format. how did he get them that small and not lose quality???

i do this as well with my dvd's. i use dvd decrypter to remove the copy protection, and then autogk to make the *.avi. you can use either the divx or xvid codecs with autogk when encoding the video. i personally prefer xvid, because i think it looks better for the size.

you can adjust the target size or quality %. both programs are free, and work very well for most movies. only problem is dvd decrypter is no longer being updated, and will not decrypt some of the new stuff. you could use anydvd/clonedvd2 to decrypt them instead, but they cost money.

i've found that about 1 GB is a good size. this retains the ac-3 encoding (dolby surround channels). you can probably go down to 700 MB and still keep good video quality if you use MP3 for audio (but you'll lose the surround channels).
