falcon, do you want to retain the menus and special features, or just the movie?

Got my burner 3 weeks ago, and have successfully backed up the following movies - including all the extras/special features:
Black Hawk Down,Vanilla Sky,The Time Machine(2002),Star Trek 1,2,3, Hannibal, Lord of the Rings (took 4 discs! whew), Collateral Damage.
My machine is a P4 with 512k RAM, WinXP. I'm using Smart Ripper, IFOEdit .91, and DVD Decrypter to burn the disc image.
They all work fine on my Sony 5 disc changer.
I think the biggest problem I've had was trying to burn with Nero (I have the latest version). Sometimes the discs play on my standalone, sometimes not. It was driving me CRAZY - I now have a stack of coasters. My somewhat bias conclusion - NERO SUCKS! Try creating a disc image with IFOEdit and burning with DVD Decrypter. I think you'll save your sanity!

I read some people have problems with IFOEdit and WinXP, but some boards specifically recommend it - so I guess it's a case by case thing. Personally, I never had a problem with it.
Also, using IFOEdit to create an image requires a .dll file. If you don't want to go through the hassle of installing it, you can use imgtool.dll. I got it on the doom9.net website. When you download and unzip the file into a separate directory, you'll get a good tool called imgtools.exe to make a disc image.

Here's how to burn an image with imgtools:
Before you start, move your VIDEO_TS directory into the root directory. This is very important, as the program will only look for the movie files in the root directory, and it has to be named VIDEO_TS. So, for example, say your movie, after splitting is in d:\vanillasky\disc1\VIDEO_TS and d:\vanillasky\disc2\VIDEO_TS. First thing, move disc1 folder into the root directory (d:\VIDEO_TS)
Open ImgTools. Where it says Select Source Dir, browse to d:\ (or wherever your VIDEO_TS folder is). Next, under drive, click on an unused drive letter, and click Make Drive.
Then click DVDImage.
On the next screen, next to DVD Drive:, browse to d:\ again.
next to Outout Image File: make up a name for the image file, say disc1.img
Then put a checkmark on Create Disc Image - it will start the imaging process - on a fast computer, should take about 5 minutes.
Once it's done, move your VIDEO_TS folder back to it's original location, and do the same with your disc2 folder. Of course, when you name the image, make it disc2.img
Then burn with DVDDecryptor.

Oops! 1 mistake!
When you open IMGTool, Select source directory, go to d:\VIDEO_TS --- INSTEAD OF d:\. Very important! Otherwise, you'll make an image of the entire d: drive.

Hey Pbexpress, you seems to know too much to be a newbie. Thanks for answering my question. I have a DVD200i, and have yet tested my drive. I am trying to burn a DVD-5 first using the DVDDecrypter guide here. I don't need IFOedit for doing this right? Yeah, I am running on XP, I kinda stayed away from IFOedit because so many people are having problems with it. Thanks for your informations, I hope I find them useful.

I learned everything I know from this and other forums out there, and lots of trial and error. As far as burning DVD5, you can probably do it without IFOEdit, but I would still use it to play the movie first, and to do the REGIONFREE, REMOVE P-UOP, and GET VTS commands. The last one is especially important as it checks the start sectors to make sure your disc will play on a standalone.
Besides, almost every new release is DVD9, even if the movie is under 120 minutes. I think it's worth the effort to learn IFOEdit.

For all those having stability problems with IFOEdit and WinXP, what kind of processor are you using? I've noticed that a few people having crashing problems are using Athlon chips. Anybody using Intel and WinXP experience crashing?
My previous system was an Athon 1200, with a VIA chipset, and I found it to be very buggy. I now have a P4 with an Intel chipset, and everything works well so far. Also, keep in mind that you'll need a fairly robust system to do this DVD copy thing.

I also have a Dell desktop 8200 with Intel P4 processor and WinXP. My HD is 80 GB and I have a 256 MB memory. Do you think IFOedit will run under these settings? Thanks.

I also have a confusing ASPI question. I managed to download the ForceASPI 1.7 and were able to set the ASPI layer to 4.60, then I managed to get new version 4.71 installed, but somehow wowpost.exe and winaspi.dll is still in
4.60 (1021) while ASPI32.SYS and WINASPI.DLL is in 4.71. The ASPI installation verification screen looks like this.

Windows XP

Components Version Size

ASPI32.SYS 4.71.1 17005 bytes
WOWPOST.EXE 4.60 (1021) 4672 bytes
WINASPI.DLL 4.60 5600 bytes
WINASPI32.DLL 4.71.1 45056 bytes

Is this what I am suppose to get from 4.71 version? Whats 4.60 (1021) mean? IS there a way to get both WOWPOST.EXE and WINASPI.DLL to updated to version 4.71 too? Thanks.

My system is:

WinXP
Intel Pentium 4 2.4bGhz 533Mhz
2Gb Memory
240Gb SCSI Hard Drives

IfoEdit works fine apart from the Image creator - but then, I have no problems with creating the DVD's etc. and all works fine.

Your system looks fine for IFOEdit, although bumping your RAM to 512K certainly can help. As far as your ASPI question ... sorry, not a clue! I was fortunate not to have any ASPI related issues, as I've seen some others have.

Hi, are you saying that I don't need to install ASPI if I am using XP?
