My brother and I were discussing which is better for compatibility in different dvd players. His Sony dvd player will not play certain ones and I'm wondering if +/- has anything to do with this. Do Sony's have this problem in general? I want the most comapatible blank for playing in a home dvd player. Any help on this?

Before anyone else chimes in and turns this thread into a + vs - debate, simply use the format that works best for YOU! Try a few -R's, then a few +R's (but be sure to booktype +R's to DVD-ROM). Which ever format plays in the most standalones you are going to use, then use that format.
I will add that I have an uncle that works for a DVD-burning business (turning family videos and such into DVD's for playback), and they use -R's. They rarely ever have compatability complaints. I personally use BOTH formats.
The most important thing is to use QUALITY MEDIA!
Always looking for the good stuff.

Some set top players date back to before there was a + format. I have a Sony like that, and only -R will work.. I even have a six year old Win Me computer with DVD reader like that as well.
Recently Cheap Chinese noname DVD players actually read most everything. Go figure.

DVD+R booktyped to DVD-ROM with quality media works best for most.

Plus or dash?
The main thing, stick to the format which suits your needs.
I had a sony dvp ns-325 and that baby played anything I threw at it from all 5 of my burners at the time. Plus/dash/booktyped dvd-rom/and plus rw. It did get a lot of wear and tear on it and started freezing and pixelling.Lens cleaner helped, but when it came time to play my dual layers, the freezing got worse.A new El cheapo stand alone player took care of that issue.
I had an apex el-cheapo stand alone and it would play anything you threw at it from all but one of my burners. It wouldn't recognize my +8x kyhpermedia burner's backups despite using taiyo yuden media.
Quote: I want the most comapatible blank for playing in a home dvd player
If that is what you desire, not only media quality, but dvd burner quality is also a major factor. I've got 6 pc burners and a tv recorder. 3 are benq's a booktyping away. The others are I/O Magic 16x/HP640c/and that Khypermedia +8x are not burning at all!!!.
My booktyped benq backups using the plus format will play virtually anywhere I want them to.No need for me to worry about using the dash format. Not so lucky with the non benq drives. Huge compatability difference on my non benq drives. All my drives will play their own backups, but my stand alones can tell the variations between all those burners. That's why I got 3 benqs a burning,HP for reading and lightscribing/Khypermedia for reading/and an I/O Magic 16x still sitting in it's original box.
Media quality is critical, but so it burner quality.Don't buy a generic brand of dvd burner. Stick to the big boys, and your compatability issues will be reduced:
Plextor
Benq
Lite-on
LG
Pioneer
NEC
Sony
Not in any particular order. I place them as booktyping capabilities.Top 4 already to booktype using special utility or burn program. Pioneer and NEC needing special hacked firmware to booktype, but they are excellent drives using the dash format.
Any burner not on my list,I wouldn't even consider even if they were $20
Anybody have an Odd Lots or Big Lots store around? They have a $23 dollar symphonic Progressive dvd player. I just picked one up saturday because I lost my remote for my el cheapo $35 walmart special magnavox. That symphonic is playing everything I throw at it,including dual layers. I also found out that same remote works on my Magnavox so I can use that remote, Sweet!

I've had alot more success using -R on my standalones.
I had an older Sony that would not play + R's.
( Never booktyped)
But I've seen that the cheaper dvd players($20-$50 price range)
seem to play alot more different type of media w/ no problems.
Just my 2 cents....I prefer -R's

Agree, sometimes the Bookyting option is not available making -R a better choice. None of my three burners will booktype (two came as part of new computer packages and are Pioneer DVR-108 and NEC 3520a; the other is an older TDK 440n that is a rebadged NEC 1300A).
Besides, I have stockpiled >200 blank DVD-Rs.

If you do not booktype +R disks they are less compatible for older players than -R or booktyped +R to DVD-ROM
