@YaOwn1
Depends on who manufactured them. Maxell is probably better if it was made in Japan. Other in store good media - Look for made in Japan Fuji or Sony. Then there's verbatim - quality media.
This thread is better off in the media forum instead of the shrink forum so I see if it can be moved.

The 8x speed Office depot media is made by Ritek. R-03 on the +8x and G-05 on the dash 8x. Very good media, but some members are saying the g-05 quality is going down hill. Those R-03's perform as well as my tys/hitachi maxells/and verbatim.

Now on the +16x OD media,Ricohjpn-r03 are their MID code.I'm not sure who makes their dash 16x media.
I've burned a couple 50 packs of the +16x ricohs and ran into 6 bad discs. The first 50 worked great, but ran into some factory quality issues on 6 in a row on the second spindle. Looked like a water spot inbetween the acrylic layer and dye. Ok once I visually looked at them and got out of that area of the spindle.

I'd still take those 8x's over 16x's. They are not on sale this week. Usually you can get them for 25 cents each in a buy1/get 1 free. Last sale that I bought some was a buy1 and get 2 free. This amounted to 20 cents each. 25 cents each is the max that I will pay for OD or Maxell riteks.

BTW: If you put back the Office dash 8x spindle and grabbed the Maxell dash 8x,you probably got Ritek-G05 on them as well. Same goes with the Maxell plus 8x with the Ritek-R03 code. Look at those wrappers for country they were manufactured in. If they were made in japan, you got ya some Hitachis. If made in taiwan, then most likely Riteks and a slim chance of cmags in the dash format.

You also probably paid 30 cents each if you bought them on sale.

YaOwn1: What's the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive?

What format are you using?

Some brands of dvd burners may not like ritek media. My benqs will burn them all day long.

Wow so many choices I?m glazing over. I?m getting from this however that my best choice would be Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim? I?ve used some of the cheapo Staples ones and have had good luck so far. (not that many). I?ve seen at the supermediastore some good prices. Is this store good?

Any opinions on +R or ?R? I?ve done both and both worked decent.

Thanks!

That is the main criteria,as long as you have no problem burning and playing either format.Buying media locally, both plus and dash are the same price. When you buy them over the web,the dash has a cheaper price.

The plus format is what I stick with. I have no issues with the dash for my personal burning and playing, but a few of my family members can't play my dash backups, out of all 3 of my benqs. However, after I get done with my backups on the plus format, they are booktyped to dvd-rom. This booktyping makes them higher compatable on stand alone players/pc drives/and game consoles. This helps trick those picky stand alone players to be able to recognize your backups.

Not every burner has this booktyping capability. It's all about compatability because stand alones can have a harder time with backups.Usually the fancy high dollar ones and the ones with a lot of wear and tear.

Sometimes you may have to use dash, sometimes plus.Your dvd burner and stand alones decide which format they like. Otherwise, you'll get some sort of No Disc Inserted/dirty disc/or wrong region error.

Supermediastore: Very reputatable. Throw in Rima.com and meritline.com.

Staple's uses a lot of moser bauer for their media. You'll see Made in India on those outer wrappers. Some drives will have a harder time with them.A buddy of mine coastered out quite a few on his NEC 1100A. He then gave the rest to me and I had no problem with them. The price of them is what gets to me. Usually when staples have their brand name media on sale, they are about the same price as the sony that they put on sale at another date. Usually around 30 cents each. I've grabbed a whole ton of sony/fuji tys for that same price at staples. They also have HP and Memosux sales which I don't even bother. Staples is only 2 mins away, but I'll drive 40 mins to Office Max and bestbuy. I'll drive an hour to get to Office Depot if I need be.
