I have a Windows 98 system with 2 GB free space (The total disk capacity itself is 5 GB and only 2 GB is free ).
I know that DVD movies could take upto 8GB. Can I rip a section of a source dvd movie that is less than 2 GB , burn it to a writable DVD , delete the ripped file from the HD, rip the next section of say less than 2 GB from the source DVD, burn it to the rewritable DVD and so on till the entire movie is burned ?

Please let me know if this is possible. Your clarification would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Grab a 40GB harddrive quickly, while they are still available!
You can get them for $49 bucks (Canadian) - 80GB are only $10 bucks more, but you cannot be sure your PC (BIOS) will work with an 80.
40GB would be a pretty sure thing - but hurry!

So do I, LoL :^) My beloved old Pentium Pro.
But I wouldn't be ripping DVDs with it. Win98 not good for ripping anyway... you need WinNT and NTFS (and more than 1 harddisk) to rip DVDs comfortably.
I don't care what PC or how old it is: if it runs, I would invest $50 bucks in a new HD for it, no problem.
I went through University on a 386-DX40.
Keep 'em running! (And out of landfill.)

Mine is a notebook PC. Before I buy additional hard disk, I would like to test if my recently purchased dvd writer works with my Win 98 notebook PC by ripping say 10 minutes of the video from the source dvd so that it fits onto my HD and then burning it onto another DVD using an dvd writer and then verify if the recorded movie plays fine.
Let me know if this is possible (ripping & burning a part of the movie) or do you think the only way to rip and burn a source movie DVD is to rip and burn the entire DVD.
Your advise will be greatly appreciated.

Ahhh - notebook eh?
I would pop in a DVD and rip a Trailer off it
(your own little 180-second film).
For example, the Trailer for Saving Private Ryan is magnificent - I actually have it ripped, along with the movie :^)
You can pay big $$ for notebook HDs - I just looked at some 7200RPM Seagates that were pretty dear!
But I can get a 40GB/8MB Samsung Spinpoint MP0402 (5400RPM) for $79 bucks, not too bad.

That sounds positive. If you say that it is possible to record just the trailer from a dvd video, then I hope it means that I should also be able to burn individual chapters of the actual movie, one at a time. Right ? If thats the case it might not be worth spending extra bucks on a Hard drive. I wouldnt mind the laborious process of burning 10 minutes of the movie at a time if it is possible :) Dont you think so ?

I think you're nutty - I spend $50 bucks on lunch.
Get a new harddisk. An external one would be good for you.
Seriously, you can rip a DVD chapter by chapter, and even transcode it that way. But you can't burn a DVD like that - you must write a compliant DVD Video, and you have to burn that disc-at-once, no further sessions possible, finalized.
I'm sure your old laptop is fine (I have, like I said, a nice old rig here myself). Just stop trying to copy DVDs with it!
I have 3 harddisks totalling 570GB. Trust me, you CANNOT copy DVDs using only 1 harddisk with 2GB free.

I get lunch from home because I am the kinda guy who doesnt spend on something unless there is absoultely no alternative. After all there are several rainy days on which saved money could come handy.
The reply you gave at last was what I was looking for from the get go for my specific question "Is it possible to burn a dvd in pieces or not?" You finally said that I had to write a compliant DVD Video, and burn that disc-at-once. I wasnot aware of this and so this was the info I was looking for on this thread.
If this is so then I can rest assured that there are no 2 ways about it and I will go for the external hard-disk or probably a new desktop system with a built in burner altogether.
Thanks for the info and also for the initial info on hard-drives that I could use if I decided to upgrade.
