I started using the custom size for backing up. I use 4400 so its not to close to the outer edge. Is this good or should I put it at 4500 or 4600????

What does this mean.....

(but be sure to booktype +R's to DVD-ROM)

i ever do that with my +'s. But have never had trouble using them.

last how do i check a disc ID Code???

What program you using?

I use quality media and keep my backup target set at 4360 mbs using DVD Shrink.
4380 mbs is max for a single layer blank dvd. A blank dvd will state it holds 4.7 gbs. After all the transfers of the byte, that actual size is about 4.38 gbs. If you look at the properties of your hard drive, that'll show the difference of those translations. My 200 gb HD will only hold 189 gbs of actual data. Not the 200 gigs that is in the specs. I lost 11 gigs betweem that transfer.

To find MID code and to see if your plus format backups are booktyped to dvd rom:
Look for the free version with adverts here:

http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

Or this program will also tell you that same info and it's also free:

I see a lot of replies to newbies with that heading. Most newbs have no clue about booktyping. Booktyping can only be performed with a dvd burner with this capability and only using the plus format media. Benq/plextor/LG/Lite-on/Ricoh/ are some brands with this capability. They can have some burn programs like Nero to booktype them,or use a separate utility to achieve booktyping. Drives like Pioneer and NEC need special hacked firmware for this capability.

This booktyping is the altering of the plus format into the more universal dvd-rom format. It actually fools stand alone players into recognizing those backups. This also gives you a third format to pow around with on those picky stand alone players to be able to get them to recognize your backups.

Booktyping is an asset if you play your backups on a slew of dvd stand alone players/game consoles/and pc drives. If you only play them in a couple of drives, then no big deal. It's a big compatability issue and some of those stand alones and booktyping is another option.

What is the brand name and model # of your DVD-RW drive?
