Reading a DVD-R recorded on a DVD recorder on my PC

Hello everyone! Here's my problem. I have a friend in England who occasionally sends me DVDs that he's made on his DVD recorder. He sent me a DVD-RAM disc in the past and I was able to pop it into my DVD-RW drive on my PC and read the files, no problem. Power DVD was able to read the DVD-VR files, so I was thrilled!!! But today I got a disc in the mail from him and it's recorded on a DVD-R and for some reason my DVD-RW drive is not able to read the disc. When I put it in, my PC thinks it's a blank DVD-R (it pulls up the window asking if I want to open a writable folder.) I was wondering if anyone on here knew of a way that I could read this disc on my PC so I could see the programmes he sent.

Incidentally, I don't know the model name or number of the player... sorry...
