I for one do not know everything, by a long shot, so I thought perhaps I was missing an option that was not beknown to me by right clicking. After all, there's more than one way to skin a cat, heaven forbid (about skinning the cat).

Best regards,

Rich

I just bought the Dell 630m and it comes with this drive...I use Nero and noticed that I also get only 6x on dvd recording whent he Memorex media I have is slated at 8x....I had another Dell laptop just recently before I bought the 630m and it had a Toshiba DVD Drive and I used the exact same version of Nero with the exact same media(same spindle) and got 8x....so that leads me to rule out the media and Nero...so must be the drive???? I'll have to check my firmware when I get home...not sure what version is installed since I've only had it a week or 2

Memorex purchases from many different manufactures, and unfortuantely most of it is crap. Best way to indentify the Memorex media is to download DVDInfoPro here, http://www.DVDInfoPro.com Make sure you get the free version.

You can also use DVD Decrypter in ISO write mode to identify the media.

Use Quality Media; avoid Memorex-CMC, get the good "stuff": Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Verbatim, Ricoh or other top name products.

Good luck,

Rich

I will start buying Verbatim from now on....just weird that my media from same 50pk spindle burned at 8x on Toshiba DVDRW, but the Sony only recognizes 6x max...

That's one of the problems purchasing media such as Memorex (CMC?), they sometimes do not work properly on all burners.

i've run the exact same media (memorex ritek discs) on two different burners, the sony one and a dell desktop one...completely different burn speeds. also different burn speed in my panasonic vcr/dvd burner.

i think it's a hardware problem...going to call dell.

Getting a different burn speed is not much different than having different burners rated for different speeds. For optimum burn speeds you have Nero taking into account the burner (firmware) and the media to be burned. I have 2 burners on my system and I don't get the same top speeds. My Plextor gets an optimum burn speed of 10.2X for the Sony (Taiyo Yuden) 8X +R. My HP burner burns at the rated speed of 8X. With poor media and dodgy drives, the speeds could easily dip lower. ID the media and compare speeds with the individual burner on different batches to see if the speeds are constant. Variations between drives only tells you that one gets a better speed rating than the other. I don't burn DVD videos at 10.2X, so it makes no difference to me that the HP has a lower rated speed according to Nero.
