I recently bought a new Plextor PX-740A because I wanted to be able to burn DL discs. I have nero Ultra 7, and i'm using Ritek DVD-R DL media which I know is not the best but it should be sufficient. Prior to buying this drive I used to burn on DVD-R's, and had no problem using shrink DVD and Nero.
However Now I am simply burning coasters, the disc completes the burn process without an error but then will not play in any other drive other than the one it was burned in. It almost reminds me of when I first started burning CD's and would forget to close the disc. I have yet to try them in a standalone player, my assumption is that if it won't play in a computer it most definetly won't play in a standalone. I'm really confused as to what the problem is? HELP!!! These are expensive coasters!!!
I'll post a NERO simulation if necessary.
Thanks

It's not that they just won't play in the computer, the computer won't even read them. The drive usually ends up spitting the disc back out.

First, I would try Verbatim DVD+R DL media & booktype them to
DVD-ROM, if your burner suports booktype setting. With these, burn at 2.4x to be safe. These may be bought at Best Buy this week for $19.99 for 10. These are the Best Dual Layers I know of. You should be able to tell in Nero 7 if it can be booktype set to DVD-ROM. I would be sure you have Plextor's Latest firmware too. HOW are you burning these with Nero? I mean: Are you using Nero Express? If so, do not click "Quick Copy". Drive to drive copying. Let Nero burn an image to your Hard drive then to your Blank in your Burner. Be sure you set the burn speed . 2.4 x would be the safe setting for Verbatim DVD+R DL. I haven't had any problems with these Verbatim DVD+R DL playing back at all.

That particular plextor drive is a rebadged benq/phillips and is capable of bitsetting. I agree with bunnyrip to use some verbatim DVD+R DL media and booktype them to dvd-rom. If your backing up the entire disc I would recommend using DVD Decrypter read iso then write iso.

@2IIPack,
I would say that to answer your question, The better the media, the better the playback quality. I have never backed a Game up, but I am sure the ssame basic rules apply. Use High Quality Media, burn no faster than 4x, (Duial Layer 2.4x) and you'll get the best quality. With that said, I must say Verbatim DVD+R DL would be best. Verbatim does have The Best DVD+R DL out there.

Picture quality actually depends on what software you use if you are compressing to a DVD5. Media itself will not really affect picture quality unless of course you use some cheapo stuff and you get pixelation. Good quality media will lower the chance of playback issues such as freezing, pausing, and pixelation. Good quality media also has better longivity.
As long as all variables are kept the same and you don't have any playback issues, you probably will not see any difference in picture quality between high quality media and budget media. Keep in mind you are taking a chance of having playback issues, longivity issues and pixelation with lower grade and budget media.

Well said Mort81!
I learn things & I also forget to add something like you just did. I guess I was suffering from "Tunnel Vision" & focusing on which media was better. Your point is true. Software plays a BIG role in quality of playback.Even with The Best Media one can ruin the back-up & see poor quality. Very Well said Mort81! Thank You.

Hey Mort, did ya mean the software used to read the DVD or the software used to encode the DVD files, or the burner software, or some or all of those? ;) Us noobs have problems understanden what ya mean dude. ;) Won't software problems and hardware problems mimic media problems? Is it true that sometimes a user has to go through a process of elimination to see what the problem is? Is it true Nero ugrades are currently causing users problems with both Nero 6.6.1.4 and the latest Nero 7 revisions? How long has your cheap discs lasted in comparison to the quality media, and what was the brands and manufacturers? What if... ;)

There's a section here at AD devoted to games. The guys that hang out there would be more up on the specific needs involved for games. Quality media is a no brainer, but there may be particular problems and needs to be addressed. A friend of mine burns games and he mentioned there are some things different.
