i have win xp and i set the power options in control panel to shut down after 1 min to see if it works and a min goes by and nothing happens does anyone no what the problem could be

I dont hink it shuts down the cpu only the hdd,unless it says cpu cause i know win98 it can only turn off the hdd

Did you click apply after choosing 1 minute?
It could also be that your pc isn't compatible with power management of that type.

i have just noticed that in power management under ups tab it say that the ups service is currently stopped. could that be the problem

no because you dont have a UPS

i dont think so...
what exactly is it that youve set to turn off because as far as i know you cant actually make the system shut down you can only make it standby, which doesnt actually turn the computer off, effectively its just the same as turning your monitor off.
