It seems there was some kind of defect in my old burner. A Sony. Now as I go back and look over many of my copies. I get and invalid structure error on almost all of them. Is there any way around this, or a way to repair these. Or am I going to have to start from scratch and back everything up again?

Old adage: Garbage in - Garbage out

Would suggest that you are going to have to start from scratch and back everything up again.

No magical solutions for poor quality burns/media

Totally right colw!

headcase make sure your new burner, has up to date firmware, and go to the media forum to find out what, and what-not to use.

Totally agree. Most of my Sony DVD's are playable, but if I wanna run them through the PC (to make another copy), I'll get an error message. What does that mean? Stick to Verbatim's or TY's! Since the Sony's, I haven't looked back.

Actually, the burner itself is Sony. The discs are a wide range from TDK to Phillips To Memorex. ALL kinds. THis is before I found this place and leanred what to use. I can copy some of them with CloneDVD, but then those copies won't work with shrink afterwards either. Its something to do with the burner. Oh well. Looks like I've got close to 400 discs to redo. Damn!

Just thought Id bump this to see if anyone else might have an idea for a practical solution other than recopying all of my movies. Would vobblanker help at all? Just wondering.

headcase,
You can try it but it is like Colw said Garbage in-Garbage out. If the disk is bad there reallly is no way to make it good. If VobBlanker does not help try DVDDecrypter in iso mode> read. Look to see how many read errors it gets. If it gets none then use the iso write mode

@headcase
As Car.Mike pointed out try decrypter - usually the best for these imo. But they may have degraded to the point of no return!
One last prog to try is isobuster if decrypter fails. Here's a link:

There really is no way to fix a bad disc - unless your redo it either from the original or the copy (if you can rip it)

Aside from the program and media issues, do the disks have paper lables?

With such a large collection, lables may have been chic at first. I jumped at the thought of having a nice lable on my disks. Have since dumped all of my paper lable stuff.

PS: with the prices of HD's dropping, buy a few big ones and keep as many of your movies on them as you can.

I just recently had a disc that AnyDVD would turn itself off for this reason. It would play fine and I probably could have copied it by just using Nero, but I ran it through VobBlanker and it took care of it. That seemed to correct the DVD structure. I have no idea why the structure was wrong. It was a quality disc and not real old. I find that every time I use Shrink and Nero with a dual layer disc I get this problem with the result. DVDDecrypter ISO read and ISO write works fine for this with dual layer discs.

That is why VobBlanker is so special and powerful at the same time, and plus it's FREE.

Nearly 99% of all my backups, I processed the VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker regardless if I ripped my movie with DVDFAB Decrypter or DVD Decrypter alone via Mode, File F. I can live with (wait) 5 minutes for VobBlanker to "process" and filter out any left over craps, bad sectors, dummy cells, invalid structures, etc. and have a true backup (free of craps) once and for all, meaning no glitches down the road. Furthermore, the fact that I like VobBlanker is simply because I can BLANK out any useless junks (i.e. FBI Warnings, previews/trailers, Rating Logos/screens, etc.)

The only time that I don't use VobBlanker is when I used "DVD Decrypter + PgcEdit + PSL plugin + FixVTS". FixVTS is doing the same thing as VobBlanker does, it process and filter out any left over craps/junks (uncrackable sectors, cells, ect.) However, FixVTS can not BLANK out any unwanted VTS, pgc, cells, etc.

Best of lucks to all and happy burning.
