Recently, every back up I've made will play in my PC and in my trusty APEX standalone, but will not play in the Cyberhome players I have.

(I Make backups of kids movies, so that my daughter can carry all her movies in a book, and the originals stay nice and safe in our movie room)

When inserted, the disks spin up and the player keeps saying "Loading". This isn't an issue with the Arccos copy protection- those I can't get to copy at all. And the disks do play with no problem in the APEX standalone player.

Any ideas? I've tried removing trailers and commercials with AnyDVD, and I've used Shrink and CopyDVD to make my backups- withj the same end result.

How fast are you burning and what type of media are you using? Some standalone players are picky with media.
Also, if your burner supports booktyping, I would try booktyping your media (if they're DVD+R) to DVD-ROM if you aren't doing that already. Your Cyberhome player should be able to play them. Booktyping has to be done with the plus format, though. The dash format cannot be booktyped.

I've been using Verbatim disks (-R) and burnign at maximum speed (I have a 16x burner, but I think the Verbatims are only 8X). I used to use Sony disks, but about one out of every 5 would fail to write and I was throwing a lot away.

This particular spool of verbatims worked great until I got down to the last 20 or so. Now almost nothing I bakcup is playing in my Cyberhome players, nor in my daughters kids' player (can't recall the brand but it has a karaoke function built in)

OK, the media you're using is very good, so it's definately the burn speed. Burning at max speed is not recommended as you'll more than likely get errors while and/or after burning. Some people burn at half of what the advertised burn speed is, but personally, I burn all my backups at 4x. I haven't had a single coaster yet by doing this.

Agree with DakotaFan - your media appears OK but your burn speed is too fast.

Would also suggest trying on friends etc DVD players. Some players are just damm temperemtal and do not like certain types of media,

Because your burner is capable of burning at 16x doesn't mean that it will burn all media at 16x speed, it will auto adjust it's speed to match the speed rating on the disks your using. So if you're using 8x media, the burner will only burn to the media at a maximun of 8x speed and any speed below that.

When burning to media, you should never (in my opinion) have the write speed set to maximum, when burning to DVD disks for backing up a movie using a write speed of 4x is always a good thing to do, change the maximum to 4x. The other thing to try is to have shrink reduce its output file size to 4300mb, this will keep the recorder from burning too close to the outer edge of the disk where burn errors can occur (in shrink goto:edit--preferences, change the DVD-5 setting to custom and enter a value of 4300).

As mentioned above, one other thing to try if you're still having problems is to booktype to disks as DVD-ROMs. Booktyping fools the player into identifying the disk as a DVD-ROM, to do this you must use DVD+R media only and your burner must support this function.

Here's some info on booktyping and how to do it:

This is true for a lot of burners but not all, I have a Plex and it will burn at double the speed that it is rated. I believe BenQ's will also do this. I have TY 4x disks that the Plex will burn at 16x if I let it.

@ arniebear
I also have plextor burners (px-712a and a px716a capable of overburning or power record which allows the burner to exceed the max speed rating of the disk) and was gong to mention that, but removed the text since he didn't state he was doing this. I believe he'll be better off sticking to 4x for compatibility reasons.

I agree 4x is the best to go unless you are sure you will have no errors at a higher rate. IMHO even if a disk is rated at a certain speed does not mean that is the speed you have to use. Got to say I do love my Plex's I have two 716a's and they are really great.

Plextor drives are well worth the money, I wouldn't consider using anything else.

Yes, they are well worth the money, however I will say I was disappointed with the new 740. I have a 716 that is an external, and for Xmas the wife bought me the 740 internal. It is a rebadged BenQ and does just not perform like a true Plex, returned it and got another 716. I could not even booktype with the 740 I needed to use DVDInfo Pro do get it to booktype.

Try better media like Verbatim, Sony, Maxell or Fuji, the Imation are not considered very good quality media. Try burning at 4x I have two Cyberhomes and they play anything.

I believe the 740 model is nothing more that a stripped down version of the 716, they did this to keep costs down and target the mainstream users who really didn't know how to take full advantage of the 716's features (like a power user would). I too don't like the 740s and am willing to pay a little more for what the 716 can do.

The problem with the 740 is that they changed the chipset from Sanyo to Phillips which is what BenQ uses. I know Plextor wanted to make a more competitively priced drive, but I think this definitely makes a difference in the product. The 740 is just an okay drive vs. the luxury of the 716. But that is just my two cents.
