Welp, I've recently got into backing up my dvd's, and I'd like to lower the burning speed, to see if that makes any difference. (Works great downstairs, most don't work to well in the upstairs player)
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4167B DL12 (ATA) Is what ImgBurn (or DVD decrypter) says my burner is.
RITEKG05 is what the disks are.
It says the supported modes for these disks are 4x or 8x. I'd like to decrease it to about 2x or so. If I set the speed with dvd decrypter or img burn, it goes ahead and just burns em at 4x. I can select 2.4 2 or even 1x and it still burns at 4x. Help please

Lowering it under 4x isnt going to help on quility of the burn. 4x is sufficent enough slow speed. If the disc works in 1 player perfect then dosent on another it is probably the standalone DVD player that is cheap or needs cleaning to play the DVD correctly on it. I have 1 DVD player that will play everything in the world but I have 2 combo (DVD/VCR) players that are picky on the DVD's it will read. The disc I have are 4x and 8x and I cant get decrypter to burn slower as well. I tried and looked but like I said there isnt any reason to burn slower then 4x anyway.

Thanks for the reply.
I can't get these darn things backed up very well.
So far I've done 3 disks. The first one skipped for about the first 20 minutes, but not to horribly. The second disk was perfect. Just finished the 3rd, and ended up throwing it out, as it skipped every 10 seconds, and didn't seem to be stopping any time soon.
I suppose I need to try some better media? Anyone know where to get cheap good media in Canada? Preferably something I could pick up at Futureshop?

What media code are those G05 giving you? Although they're not top of the line, they should be sufficient. Be sure you're not burning too close to the edge (4300-4380), make sure you're not doing anything else on the computer when you are burning, make sure anti-virus software or anything that will take up system resources isn't running... Also make sure your firmware is up to date. I believe this is your firmware:

Thanks for the info about the edge, I didn't know that would be a problem. Wouldn't that only cause issues during the 'end' of the movie? It's skipping more at the beginning than anywhere else.
My firmway is DL12, so the latest.
The computer is being left alone during a burn, and there's no Virii scanning software running. System resources are ok. My current CPU usage is showing 0% with 700 meg o ram free (1 gig total)
I don't know if the media codes were in there anywhere, I'll try some suggestions on how to get them if they are not.

I have Nero Recode2 set to burn at 4300 output file. And yes burrning to close to the edge can cause trouble all the wat through the DVD. But uasly you only need to do that if you have medium to poor quility media but you could always try and see if that will fix your trouble.

You're using Manufacturer ID : RITEKG05. Like I said, not top of the line, but definitely should work. Unless you just got a bad batch. As larrylje said keep burn burn size down to 4300, defragment your hard drive, and maybe try new media to see if you got a bad batch. It looks like FutureShop carry's everything. If you can find Sony, Maxell, Fuji, or Verbatim, That's what I would go with by reading most posts on media. For the Fuji's only made in Japan. Try to find the Sony and Maxell made in Japan also, but I believe the concensus is that the Taiwan is okay also. And of course Verbatim are always VERY good.

Just burned a repeat of the one that didn't work. Used Nero, which only allowed me to select 4x or 8x. I burned it, and upstairs it skips really badly. Downstairs there was one little glitch I spotted, but it didn't skip badly enough to disrupt the audio.
I'll try burning a couple more, and seeing how they turn out. If I get any more heavy skippers, I'll just throw out the batch of dvd's and buy some Maxells or something from futureshop.

Wow, what a big difference. I went ahead and bought a 50 pack of Sony DVD's from Walmat.
Absolutly perfect burn. Took it straight upstairs, and it plays without a glitch. Even the best burn I got with the Riteks would skip like mad in the upstairs player.
Plays fine at the end of the DVD without bothering with the burn size set at 4300. I forgot to even change the burn speed, and it burned at 8x accidently.
I must have got a bad batch of Riteks.
