I have a huge amoung of data on two hard drives -- one 300GB drive and a 160GB one. I need to have my system redone, essentially, due to a possible infection and general efficiency problems.

The tech who wants to do the job also believes I need at least one new, clean drive for the system files. (No, he isn't planning to migrate me to a new OS, which is why this is being posted in the Windows section).

What I would like advice on are these questions:

1. Given the amount of overall data I am handling (the fact that two drives totalling 460GB are nearly completely full gives some indication of how much data I work with), how big does the system drvie need to be?

2. How useful are externally-mounted drives for storage and playback of media files?

3. Would I be better off simply saving up, buying a new system in three months, and ripping out my current hard drives and putting them in external mounts? And are there multimedia systems in the $450-$550 range that will do what I need them to?

if you want another drive purely for your system files you shouldnt need anything bigger than a 40 gig hard drive, id say even less as windows only takes up about 3 gig but you cant get drives smaller than 40 gig these days. (well you can but theres no point)
