My system has a gig of ram, and i can usually burn a DVD while surfing, playing mp3's, etc. I started trying to copy my new copy of Dark Water. I started out using Nero 7 with Anydvd in the background. I stopped browsing, clicked over to check my status, and noticed my PC was super slow. i had an error saying out of memory. i tried again with same results, then switched to DVDShrink. I noticed my buffer level started climbing past 500mb,700mb, 1,000mb, 1,400mb!! i finally got an error saying 'out of memory!! is there something new on this disc, or could something have changed in my system? I'll keep trying other stuff, but i was wondering if anyone has come acroos this. thx in advance; I'm sure our resident pro's will have some helpful advice.

No AnyDVD, no DVD43, no DVDIdle Pro, no DVD Region+CSS Free.
DARK WATER help? Out of Memory is usually a RipGuard protection. To resolve the issue, use my VobBlanker combo DVDFAB Decrypter method under my sig.
Or here is a new guide that I've made for LEGEND OF ZORRO. Just follow this guide carefully and you'll be free of misery.
**NOTE: change the name to DARK WATER or any of your future dvds/movies.
Here http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/271 -- it's called "To backup any dvds with DVD Decrypter, PSL plugins + FixVTS, VobBlanker and Nero Recode 2 by Alkohol". This is possibly one of the best method ever to successfully rip and backup any dvds/movies, regardless if it's RipGuard or ARccOS.
Best of lucks to all, enjoy the guide and happy burning!!

With some of the newer releases with ARccOS, Puppetlock, Ripgaurd and bad VOBUs and bad sectors a multi step approach is necessary. As a note of interest, AnyDVD has a beta in development for these problems.
It's best to rip the files to the hard drive. AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter will rip these movies. "Dark Water" is one I recently did. Once ripped a quick compliance test is to open the files in DVD Shrink for the quick analysis. Not a sure thing, but a handy little check. Normally if Shrink opens the files successfully, it can transcode them. DVDFab Decrypter creates new IFO files for the files it rips, in some instances that is enough. For ripped files with serious compliance problems, such as some with AnyDVD + Decrypter (and even some of the DVDFab ripped ones) process the files through FixVTS. Simply open the ripped files, open FixVTS, make sure all FixVTS boxes are unchecked, drag the VIDEO_TS VOB onto the FixVTS window and click Full DVD.
All you're doing is ripping to the HD, and if the files aren't compliant, process through FixVTS for compliance. Then, with a clean compliant set of files, you can use any transcoder/burner setup you've used successfully before.
Though Alkohol's guide with the PSL2-Decrypter method is a sure method, so is the one I describe and it takes less work.

I don't remember if "Dark Water" was one of the movies with compliance problems or not. "The Legend of Zorro" definitely was. "The Cave" and "The Fog" were a couple more that I can think of easily. Madagascar may have been another. There was a number of releases that AnyDVD couldn't handle on it's own. I mentioned before, AnyDVD has a beta being tested to help solve the problems caused by the new protection schemes resulting in compliance problems.

I got a copy of The Beatles - Help, a Korean import. It has no Video_TS.VOB file on it. As good as BroBear's method is, the backup will not play. The original plays just fine in my player, however.

just an update: I used Clonedvd2 with AnyDVD and that worked, but it only copied the movie without prompting; no menu, no extras, which is no big deal. I have saved this page as a favorite for the great info.

There's a rule against multiposting on the same material, unless you're questioning the methods I used to do the backups. First of all you have an obscure Korean DVD. No reasonable way of getting a copy, unless you want to mail yours to me. Next without testing, there is no way of knowing if the disc is flawed. A DVD can play and still have enough problems not to record. A read scan of the source disc could give some insight there. Next, there is no way of knowing if you are knowledgable on the use of the software needed to accomplish the task or not. More than likely, if you've been doing other backups successfully, you either have a faulty disc or you're missing something in the process of doing this particular DVD. When all else fails, use the method suggested by alkohol and rip with Decrypter and the PSL2 method. If done properly that method doesn't fail, taking into account the DVD has to be in good condition and the user doesn't mess up.

Chill, BroBear. I'm not Grendel. I considered it to be two separate topics. Anyway, I got the puppy to burn by using Nero Recode to do just the main movie. I personally consider all the commentaries, behind the scenes, making of and that other similar crap just a hidden in front of your nose way to discourage backups.
Thanks for your help.

Actually Mr Pile, there are some extras that are worth keeping. I'm not familiar with the crap they may have put on that particular DVD. Extras and trailers were there before all the heavy protections started to be developed. Since the protections are not in the main movie, then doing movie only sometimes edits out the problem. CloneDVD2, DVD Shrink or any of the apps that can edit will do the same. I forget to mention that as most people, once they're told how, can do the entire movie DVD or not as they wish. So in the future, just do movie only and don't worry about it, unless you run into other problems. I was under the impression you wanted to backup the entire disc.
