What advice do you guys give on copying larger movies to disk-5?
I use anydvd and clonedvd2 and I have read tutorials on how to burn to 2 dvd 5's just wanted some advice on when you guys actually use this tactic.
I am looking to burn the movie "The Sting" Which has a play time of 2:09:12 seconds.
On the initial screen where I can cut scenes out select more scenes to add the quality is at 45%. . . which do I go by this one at 45% or when i click Next and it takes me to the audio and subtitle settings it is at 64% .. . Is that the quality of the whole movie now including audio?
And what % of quality would you consider it to be that you can't tell a difference between quality like anything over 85%? or 90% and above?

If you are using a DVD9 then you should be able to copy the original movie without any compression at all.
Of course the quality of the finished product will only be as good as the quality of the original, no better!

well........ it all depends on what screen size you have to watch your backups. IMO I use the 80% quality clause! If a movie quality is 80% or better than I will compress and burn the movie...... other wise I use DVDRebuilder Pro with CCE .... it gives the best compression. the only exception I do is if the movie is a flipper disk, Part one on one side and part 2 on the second side! I combine to one disk no matter what..... and surprisingly enough the quality isn't that bad at all. GOODFELLOWS was a flipper disk and using Shrink to combine both front and back sides came out great! Very little quality loss.

Ok well I do not have flipper disk, So then my question still remains at what length of a movie would put it on 2 disk?
Do you guys ever put 1 movie on 2 dvd 5's?
Lets say I wanted to make copy of Cinderella Man a 3hr movie obviously one DVD5 is not enough, with out compressing it and losing to much quality. Just want to see what you guys do thanks

Cinderrella Man didn't lose quality putting it on a DVD-5! Mine came out great..... so did movies like: LORD OF THE RINGS (all three of them), GLADIATOR, THE GODFATHER (I, II, III!), THE GREAT ESCAPE, HOW THE WEST WAS WON, and SPARTICUS (which is over 3 hours!). The quality is good enough for my 52" RCA wide screen!

I agree with IHoe on Cinderella Man, I fitted it onto a DVD5, just using Nero Recode without any loss in quality.
You mentioned FLIPPER disc, that is something completely different to a DVD9, DVD9 has dual layers, one on top of the other whereas Flipper discs are recorded on both sides.

When you used Nero recode how did you get by the copyright? ANd why did it not lose quality to where it would on anydvd/clonedvd2?

Well I alreayd purchased AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2. So im working with what I got or what is free. I also have Nero.
My question still remains right now I want to copy "The Sting" its a 2hr 9minute movie and under clonedvd2 it has a low quality even just the main movie. Is my only option to burn it to 2 disk since its a low quality and will this happen all the time with 2hr movies. I sure hope not but i dont' want to lose any quality at all. So please someone help in answering my direction question

what do you mean by low quality? is the compression down to 40%? The movies I mentioned above are 2 1/2 hrs long or longer (3hrs) and I still put them on a DVD-5 with great quality! Try it out using AnyDVD and CloneDVD! Just because your movie needs compression doesn't mean you'll get bad quality! Your only other recourse would be to use DVD-9s (DLs). this way you can get exact copies without compression and keep 100% quailty..... or YOU CAN GET OVER YOUR BAD SELF AND JUST COPY THE DAMN MOVIE AND FIND OUT HOW IT PLAYS ON YOUR STAND ALONE! Like ODMENT suggested! hahahahaha..... everyone here has given you great advise. now try it out! you won't be disappointed.

I used Shrink and put just the movie on 2 dvd's. My cutoff rule, depending on the movie, is anything around 6.2 or more.

I second what everyone told you... Copy the film... Most people here learnt with their own trial and error, you should do the same...
Take everything you don't need from the film like special features, different sound types, subs, different audio languages and then burn it... I do that all the time and never really noticed quality loss... Unless you're an audio/video expert you won't notice the difference anyway!

Actually, with CloneDVD2, you are asking for trouble when you compress that far. I would use the 85% rule of thumb for that software. For high compression, use DVD Shrink or Nero Recode.
For Shrink, use Deep Analysis and for Recode use both Advanced analysis and Slow Recording.
If you want to get rid of extra features, use VobBlanker with Shrink or Recode. The result will be the same compression ratio as CloneDVD2, but the quality will be leaps and bounds better.
As everyone is stating though, try it out yourself. Use a DVDRW if you do not want to waste a disc.
In terms of quality change, there is a difference, even if you compress to 99%, but you will not see it unless if you have a large screen and you look very carefully and are trying to find flaws.
I have compressed as far a 52% using DVD Shrink and roughly the same with Nero Recode. There is no visual difference in quality except that the backgrounds are a little blurry. Again, you have to actually look for it to see it, and it is not that bad.
Now, do not think only in percentages. Look at the size of the movie. DVDs are already compressed like crazy (sometimes 50:1). Stealth for instance is only 3000MB video and the movie is 2 hours long. Now the Sting is 2 hours and 9 minutes and seems to be 6000MB video originally (I am estimating based on what you wrote). After compressing to 64%, it will be about 3850MB video, still much larger than Stealth. This means that "The Sting" will look about the same or better as an uncompressed Stealth after the Sting is compressed to 64%.
Basically, if you compress a DVD so that movie only will fit on a DVD5, there will be no noticable difference if you use Shrink or Recode from the original. Only stuff like porn will have a difference when compressed because it uses lower bitrate, they are high/fast motion, and they are not always shot with the best cameras.
