Hey all, I've burned about 50 or so dvds and have been floating around this forum for a while collecting information and learning new things. I have a few questions that I hope some people with more experience/knowledge can help me out with.

I'm in the Army and have been backing up my entire collection of dvds to take with me when I deploy (I also like to have a copy for the kids to use so they don't destroy the originals).

I've noticed that I've had freezing and skipping problems with many dvds lately - plus they don't want to play in either my desktop or laptop, but will tend to play fine (for the most part) in my stand alone dvd player.

I was using Memorex media and didn't seem to have any problem with them (using labels with them too), but then ran out and bought something called Pengo - I used dvdidentifer and it says they're Taiyo Yuden - which many people on here say are pretty good. I think my problems began with this new batch of dvds and don't know what to make of it.

I use dvd decrypter, dvd shrink. I burn at a slow speed (x2), have a Pioneer burner that seems to work fine, have taken the advice on here and use 4300 as a custom size, have stopped using paper labels. Any thoughts about anything I might be doing wrong and why dvds wouldnt want to play on a computer. - thanks.

burning @x2 is too slow, if you have genuine TY. What Pioneer model do you have and what firmware, and what software do you use for backup?

I have searched some threads http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/193259

It seems that "Pengo" might not be what they really claim to be. You might want to try something else(buy a small pack of Verbatims or Maxell MIJ) and see how that works for you.

as a matter of fact, yes i HAVE heard of Pengo, they are a taiwanese company that produce sub-par media...my close friend that i share "dvd media" notes with has actually tried them, they are yet ANOTHER small company that uses a FAKE TAIYO YUDEN code and sells it under their own name brand...it's 100% FAKE TY, the made in taiwan is the dead-giveaway...and also upon checking for the inner hub coding, it is NOT THERE as per genuine TYs that i listed in my first post~ :) while i have PERSONALLY never used them, i trust my friend 100% when it comes to testing media; we both share a passion for dvd media and he's tried just as many different kinds as i have over the years, with some brands that even i have not tried...he tells me they are pretty piss poor and i believe him...i guess i could relate them to the 8x dvd-r Linkyo (supermediastore's own house brand-which i've heard recently have changed from FAKE TY coding to that of Optodisc or some other crappy manufacturer as people were complaining that these were FAKE TYs and supermediastore got a lot of heat for it- i DO have some of these in my possession at this time, they were given to me awhile ago for me to give me evaluation on, they burn nicely at first, but upon scanning...highest i ever got on them was about 70% due to massive PIE/PIF errors) of FAKE TYG02 coded media...the quality is POOR, the FAKE TYs DO work for some people, but if longevity is what you care about, i would avoid ALL FAKE TYs at all cost~ it simply uses a "fake TY" coding to throw off the unknowing...most of the FAKE stuff is manufactured in taiwan or even shadier factories in hong kong and china...beware

Sorry, but i guess you might need some good media.

This helps to know that the TY code is fake - I'll know to stay away from them in the future - my experience with these disks so far has been horrible compared to previous results - I'm not sure why a burn speed of x2 is too slow, guess I can do some research - I thought if I slowed the process down, then there would be less chance of write errors. I can check about firmware updates and such.

My burner is a pioneer DVR-106, I think the firmware is 1.5. - thanks.
