Hey guys, new to forum, having some issues, i have a nice new lite on burner, installed DVD shrink, and decrypter, and im burning to an ISO then opening with decrypter, to have it burn the DVD, i start to burn, and it IMMEDIALY, before writing anything to the disc, says:

I/O error!

Device: (5:1:0) Lite on blah blah blah
SCSI STATUS: 0x02
Interpretation: Check condition

CDB: 2A 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 20 00
Interpretation: Write (10) - Sectors: 0 - 31

Sense Area: 70 00 05 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 30 05 00 00 00 00
Interpretation: Cannot Write Medium - Incompatible format

The discs im using are Imation DVD - r 8x discs (my girlfriend bought them for me to back up her DVD's, now some people might say crappy discs, but in our other burner at home, ive used discs that are "Value discs" as it says; "Value disc" on the actual DVD (LOL) as well as a plethora of other media, from office depot brand, thru ritek (or however you spell it) and it burns them all with ease, so please dont immediatly jump to the media, like i know many people are prone to do, unless that is really what you think it is.

LOL!
I really think that is what it is, media!
I only once got that error, and I was using X8 Sony MIJ(made by TY). But, I was comitting sin, probably some might say:~), because I was trying to burn @12(I was experimenting). I got the same error, DVDD froze, I had to power down, restart my computer. Then I used the very same disk @x8 speed and it burned just fine. Howerver, after flashing my drive, it burned same type of media at x12(and the last one, it was just for fun:)!

What burner do you have, with what firmware? see if you need firmware update, lower the burning speed, although I would REALLY recomend changing media, even is hard to throw away money invested in poor media(before joining this site I fushed down the toilet about 30 DVDs out of a 50 Imation spindle.)

tis a brand new, just installed lite on:

SHM-165P6S

i just updated it to the lastest firmware before i came to this site, to one dated january of 2006 (latest i could fine online) and it doesn't seem to matter whta speed, ill try @ 4x, i honestly dont care if it goes slow, as long as it works.

yep just tried it all the way down to 2x, doesn't seem to make a bit of difference

When you say your using an iffy brand it's best to rule that out first. Plus the error your received usually means media. It your drives way of saying it doens't like the media.
Those imation's were probably made by cmc, prodisc or fujifilm. Now I have a liteon and call tell you from my experience that my model was not very fond of prodisc or cmc. Hit or miss - some would burn - some won't.
I have used all 3 manufacturers - fuji with good results.
So the next thing is - is your firmware up to date? This can sometimes solve the problem.

the media is imiation, made by fujifilm, (thats what decrypter says it is) and firmware is updated (did that b4 posting) to one from january of 2006, which is the latest i could find on my burner.

yep, just double checked and is apparantly the newest firmware, im gonna try to borrow a disc from a friend/neighbor tomorrow and see if it will burn, if not, im leaning towards a bunk burner then?

Well you have the firmware up date - fujifilm is not that bad imo. If your going to borrow a disc make sure it's better than fuji - like verbatim or taiyo yuden - most drives recommend these 2.
Here's are a few other reasons for your error - go to # **023005 for other suggestions if the borrowed disc doesn't work out.

so are lite on drives just crap then? cuz the one i have at home, NEC, will burn to anything, and thats kinda what i was hoping for, i dont really care if i have to drop down even to 2x to burn, but this just wont do it. hopefully i can find some other branded media today to test, otherwise i guess i wont be getting more lite on drives lol, which is too bad, ive been giving them my support through purchases for at least 4 years.

The ONLY way to eliminate MEDIA as the suspect is to use VERBATIM or Tayio Yuden discs and burn at 4x IMHO. Use anything else, and i would still suspect media first specially in your case as you say firmware is updated. If you start a thread with saying dont jump to media immediatly, then that means to me, you will not blame the media you are using, and want another answer.. Usually that means you will not listen to advice, and we are wasting our time, as you do not want to hear that media is the problem.. Ive got a liteon 1633s and it burns anything, but i only use Verbs and Tys now. And i keep my burn speed at 4x, sometimes experimenting with 6x, but ive stopped doing 8x burns now. Depends on your system. If you used Nero, we could have you put up a log and see if something else is going on with your system other than media, but with a what you provided, we dont have many facts to work with, you could have posted the whole log,, blah blah blah to you, but important stuff to error troubleshooters, so try including it next time. Dr, i have this problem. It hurts when i blah blah blah, and i ate blah blah blah before doing blah blah blah. . Can you help me dr?? See what i mean?
IMATION uses crap media manufactures, and you got slightly lucky by not getting the CMCs they use. I think of those "illegal disc and incompatible format" warnings as a good thing. Usually ppl switch to GOOD media, and the problem goes away, if nothing else major was going on with their system.

No that was only the last reason this site listed for the error. Could you have gotten a lemon? Maybe. I have a liteon sohw832 - helluva burner and ripper. Almost 2 yrs old and has done at least 500 backups.
But since you just bought this drive and I'm assuming you installed it - check your connections - even the best of us make mistakes!!
Use the good stuff - taiyo yuden or verbatim and let us know how it turns out!

no, im very willing to listen, i just dont understand and i think its redic. that i would have to buy a different kind of media for each drive, thats just poor manufacturing, but as i said, i wont know if its drive or not till i test it, hopefully tomorrow, with another disc.

Unfortunately that's how media is - I agree it is insane but what works for one may not work for another. Different set ups. Sometimes it trial and error. That's why the majority of us stick with the tried and true - Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim - few if any media related issues. Most us have done the whole trial and error bit. Plus these are almost always listed by the drive's manufacturer as recommended media. For my liteon & set up (and believe me I've tried many brands and had many headaches!) taiyo yuden and verbatim work best.

Pick them up and let us know how it goes - good, bad or otherwise!!!
I'm sure we have a few more tricks up our sleeves in case this doesn;t help :)
Oh and tell the store you bought the imation from they don't work - they should take them back - best to have your receipt too.

is that a good deal? if so ill just order from newegg, these @ bestbuy are 19.99, and higher at other places, would run about 14$ shipped total, if they are good media, ill go ahead and order, if this doesn't solve my problem, /cry :)

Ive had great success even with the MIT Sony D-21 media also, so that BB sale would be a pretty safe, and cheap way to go. Try to get the MIJ if you can though, as those are Taiyo Yudens at least they were the last time i got some Sony +R MIJ.

Got things worked out, the burner just doesn't like -r's, the new verbs worked a treat, and so did some identical imations, but just +r's instead of -r's, 3 DVD's backed up, all play beautifully :)
