I am having a serious problem trying to figure out how to convert a pal downloaded movie to my region which is region 1. I have tried dvd shrink to encode proper region but still will not play on my dvd player. Tried Anydvd, same thing no luck. Dvd shows "Playback prohibited by area restrictions". Please help. Really need to figure this out so I can move on. What will actually convert downloaded movie to region 1. Nothing seems to work.

Using DVDshrink should of make the backup region free, but if your still having a problem try using a free program called FreeDVD. No installation required and using it is pretty straight forward.

get it here:

@robrobby
You need to convert PAL to NTSC. Region 1 is NTSC format - that's why your getting the error.
The easiest way is vobblanker - I've used a few times for this - & depending on your specs it's pretty fast.
Here's a thread to help you w/ it - the 1st post explains it:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/167922
You can download it here:

Just remember to burn the files that vobblanker processed.

Do what Binkie says. That is the easiest way. I did it with Men In Tights.

Hello everyone
I have been playing around with PAL to NTSC conversions for quite a while now. Binkie you have helped me out a lot with VOBBLANKER. I just wanted to give some more info on what I have accomplished further. I have just tried DIVXtoDVD converter. This program is quite amazing. I converted my PAL disc to NTSC using this program. The result was perfect in picture quality and video/audio sync. The only problem I encountered was the playback was in 16:9 widescreen format even though I selected and confirmed 4:3 full screen format. When I selected 16:9 widescreen format the result was in 4:3 full screen mode with about 3 or 4 inches of black on all 4 sides of the picture. It did the opposite what I selected.
Now the even stranger parts.
When the copy played back from the beginning in 16:9 widescreen it did so all the way through. However when I went to the menu screen (there were no menus of course) all the titles were listed there, and when I selected the second title the playback was in 4:3 full screen format with no black at all. This happened when I selected each title individually for playback. All except the first title which still played back in 16:9 widescreen format.
Does anyone have any idea why this would happen, and any way to fix it? Apart from that glitch the conversion is outstanding quality.
Please give me any feedback you can.
By the way Binkie the converted disc played back on all the DVD players that I mentioned in the other thread.

Try this and see if you'll like the new results. Look at picture for reference.

Thanks very much for responding. However I did not have the above mentioned problems with Vobblanker. That program actually worked very well for me, apart from the fact the converted copy did not play in all my DVD players.
The problems I had mentioned in my post above were all in the program DivXtoDVD converter.

I have never used DivXtoDVD so I can't help you with that one. For any I need to convert I've only used vobblanker - fast and simple with good results as you found.

@alkohol
Another great guide!

As far as I know - no. Here's a quote from vobblanker homepage:
Quote:
VobBlanker needs a FILE mode, unencrypted backup of the DVD to be processed. This backup can be done using a ripper in FILE mode or mounting in a virtual drive an unencrypted DVD image
-VobBlanker uses the info stored in the IFOs to access the Cells inside the VOBs.
- When the VIDEO_TS.IFO file is selected, VobBlanker reads automatically all the IFOs in the same folder and stores in memory all the required info.

Have you (or has anyone else) also tried this software to go from NTSC to a PAL copy.
If not, any suggestions for accomplishing this.
I have my own work that I have to show in London and it's all NTSC.
Not copy protected material but need it in the european format.
Any thoughts.

I tried it for use by my parents in England. It worked on 2 occasions. Be aware that it may not always work. When I went from PAL to NTSC it worked great in my DVD player but would not work in my son or my neighbours DVD player. The same thing could apply when you go from NTSC to PAL even though my conversions worked for my parents. Those discs may not work in other DVD players over there.
You could try a program called convertxtodvd. I have used it with consistent results. However there would be no menus. Hope this helps.

Hello I am coverting original PAL DVDs to NTSC. Can anyone tell me which of these programs would leave the "menu" page interactive? I been using Nero vision to convert. It is pretty easy to use but the "menu" page does not give me the options to pic.,even though everything will play on its own.
Thanks

Neither program can do that from what I can tell. I am not aware of any program that actually converts and leaves the menus intact, unless it is a very high end program used by pros. If you look around this site I believe there are a number of threads that address this subject in more detail.

Like ianmerc said don't think either Nero or vobblanker will keep the menus interactive. I have never tried the menu bit but somewhere in this link a member does describe how they did it and with what prog.

Sounds like Vobblanker is the way to go..atleast try. On the other hand these postings are from last year. What i noticed, some of these guys were still fighting basic things , what Nero(even older versions) will do pretty easily these days. But i will give it a try since i got over 60 movies to deal with for rentals and i have to assume the most avarage type of DVD players out there.
Thanks again guys and i will keep reading up on the thread.
