The latest DVD Decrypter used to work on those pesky Sony discs, but evidently there is some new version that doesn't work anymore. For instance the movie The Fog generates sector copy errors in Decrypter.

I tried following this article, but with little success:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260734

I would be willing to throw away the whole chapter 1 to simplify the process. I tried that, but I end up with Video TS files that DVD Shrink doesn't seem to understand. I can actually play the video from my hard drive by double-clicking VOB 1, but I can't figure a way to burn my results.

Any help for a newbie would be appreciated. Before this latest protection scheme, I was using DVD-Shrink to shrink a movie and DVD Decrypter to burn it. Now I can't rip the new Sony movies with any software I have, at least with my knowledge of how to use the software.

Hi FloydV,

Welcome to Afterdawn. Here is a link to a thread for a program called dvdfab decrypter http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/302823. It is free and is usually up to date to backup the newest movies out. Might I also suggest the combination of AnyDVD w/ clonedvd2 though you have to purchase them the combo can backup any movie on the market today (please note they have a 21-day trial period if you want to test it out before considering purchasing. Type slysoft in your browser and you will go to their homepage. Also take advantage of the search function at the top of the page and type in AnyDVD and links refewrring to those programs will popup. Good luck.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

You can also use the free DVD Fab Decrypter to rip and then process with Shrink. If this does not work then use VobBlanker with the ripped file. You must designate a folder as your output folder and then open the folder with Shrink not the contents. You can get DVD Fab here

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/software.htm

Here is a guide for DVDFab and Shrink with Decrypter to burn

Thanks. I will try the software that you mention. I was hoping that people could recommend software that they knew worked, as opposed to me spending a lot of money randomly trying different packages until I hit something that worked.

You can't go wrong with the pay AnyDVD and Clone, they are constantly updated and support is good, and there is usually a discount. Plus you get to try them free for 21 days. You can also try the free programs DVDFab Decrypter works and is also being kept updated to deal with new protections. Decrypter still does work if you want to use the PSL2 workaround along with FixVTS, which can be little more time consuming but works.

I'm going to try AnyDVD and Clone and region+cssfree . I tried DVDFab (trial version) and it blew up when I tried to copy The Fog. The Fog is not that great a movie, but it is one that has defied copying. If I can find something that will defeat The Fog, I think I will have a good software setup.

I did the Fog using AnyDVD and VobBlanker. Then just used Nero Recode to compress and burn. This movie has ARccOS and puppetlock which is what is giving the problem. DVDFab Decrypter should work sorry it did not for you.

Edit: do not use DVDregion free along with AnyDVD use either one or the other.

Did you use DVD Fab Decrypter it is not the same as the program DVDFab, it is only the ripper part and it is free there is no trial of it?

What does VOBblanker do, and how would I use it. I used DVDfab Decrypter (the free one), maybe that is where I ran into trouble. If I purchased the full version, it should copy The Fog in a single process? I just bought DVDclone III, and it doesn't work with The Fog. It also has little glitches that work OK on a regular player, but that drive a PC drive nuts. My wife may go nuts if I blow another $50 on DVDFab the full version.

DVD Fab Decrypter the free one is fine, you do not need the pay program. Take the output file from DVD Fab and run it through VobBlanker and then use Shrink. You can get it here

http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm

Make sure you designate a folder for your output file, then when opening Shrink open the folder.

Thanks. To summarize, first I use DVDfab to rip the dvd to a folder. Then I use VOBblanker, putting its results in another folder. Then I use DVD Shrink to compress it. I have Shrink set to call Decrypter to burn the DVD.

I appreciate the help. If this works, then can I assume that the full version of DVDfab Decrypter would rip, compress, and burn in one pass? Or would I still need another program like VOBblanker, and another to burn? I have the fancy version of Nero 6, Copy2DVD, and DVD Decrypter that I can use as burning tools.

It's been a while since I had to catch up on what is happening in the software world. When HD-DVD gets here, I guess we can all start over again. One of the sites I visited said that DVD Decrypter had been removed because Macrovision had bought them out. I would think that is the reason there are no updates to D Decrypter to handle the newest hurdles.

If you have Nero 6 check here at member alkohol's blog and the guide on how to do your movie using DVD Fab Decrypter VobBlanker and Nero Recode2. It is an excellent guide and I have used this method many times.

Thanks. This is an excellent guide! Do you prefer Nero Recode 2 to DVD-Shrink?

I do prefer Nero Recode over Shrink, it is much faster and the quality is excellent. The same developer that did Shrink also did Recode, he works for Nero now.

Thank you everyone! I used DVDfab, VOBblanker, and DVD Shrink which called DVD Decrypter to burn. The Fog has fallen! Sony you can kiss my tush!

I do appreciate all the help you've given a complete newbie to your forum. I will have to explore some of the other software that is mentioned in this thread. It's nice to be a part of a community that can point me to software that is good as opposed to me guessing and falling on it by chance.

I have recently fallen in love with the forum community. I belong to two Suzuki Hayabusa (motorcycle) forums, a SCUBA forum, several Audio/Video forums, and I am looking for various photography forums. All of these are good places, but Afterdawn fills a particular niche that only A/V people would understand. I write code (primarily database apps) for a living, and even my wife doesn't understand why I get excited when I can break something as abstract as an anti-copy boundary.

I hope you won't mind, if, in the future, I ask some questions that seem obvious to you. I have become complacent in keeping up with the latest copy techniques. I am drooling at the prospect of copying the upcoming HD-DVDs. I am about to purchase my first HD monitor and I'm torn between Sony's (yeah Sony's) SXRD, and waiting for SED to arrive.

Anyway, I'm rambling again. Thanks for all the help.

Glad everything worked out for you, so far there has been nothing that can't be backed up you just need to experiment and find the right combo. Fortunately with AD it is easy there are enough people on here to help you. Come on back if you have questions and don't be a stranger. Happy burning :)

@FloydV,

Throwing out chapter 1 completely takes you into one of my advanced editing guides. This involves a bit more work to get a workable DVD. The easiest way to pick a cell to keep in chapter 1 is to keep the last cell. The newer movies usually combine the Sony logo with the beginning of the movie. But you simply highlight the cell with your mouse, and it will give you the file size and playback time after a second or two. Always begin from the bottom of chapter 1 and work up.. When you find the first small cell, this is where you stop and uncheck that as well as all the others above.

I have a newer guide written if you want (let me know through PM). It uses the Cave. Also, it will work for using DVDFab, but you would begin with the FixVTS Step. I also have a guide on Ripguard which uses an almost identical method (meaning the DVD is fixed with VobBlanker after a rip).

Just some info on why following the guide I wrote did not work for you if you did pick the correct cell. You most likely forgot to either rip the rest of the disc, or move the modified files into the original VIDEO_TS folder. DVDFab + VobBlanker is basically the exact same thing as DVD Decrypter + IFOEdit + FixVTS, only IFOEdit will also remove the references to the blank cells (clean the IFO), but I am not sure if VobBlanker will do that.

If you notice, with VobBlanker you are processing the original files & moving them to a different folder when it is processed. After which, you open the processed files (in the new folder) with DVD Shrink. You have to do the same with IFOEdit and DVD Shrink (actually FixVTS before Shrink).

As for Alkohol's guide, another fine guide by Alkohol!! They are always so easy to follow. The PDFs I write are almost as good, but I edit all the photos within Adobe so, the uploaded images never have notes like Alkohol's guides do, only the PDFs.

Here is some info that can save a few seconds of time and make you use less clicking though. Instead of ripping to "x:\name of movie\video_ts\video_ts", save to "x:\name of movie\video_ts". Then when you process with VobBlanker, save to the input folder (use input folder option). VobBlanker will automatically save a backup to x:\name of movie\VobBlanker Backup. This way, there is no browsing for a destination folder and you simply open and process.

I always delete the backup right after, but keeping it is safer until you at least test out the backup.

Either way, happy ripping!!!!

Thanks! I think I became frustrated by not knowing how to use IFOEdit and FixVTS. Also, I had only used the more simple modes of DVD Decrypter, and I couldn't follow what you were doing with it.

Now that I have become more knowledgeable about how the programs can work together, I can follow your process. I learned a lot along the way thanks to this forum.

I agree. I just purchased AnyDVD and ConeDVD2 after seeing the great job they did on a disc. Is there any advantage to buying the all-in-one DVDfab Decrypter? I'm thinking that I might need to use VOBblanker, and in an all at once process, there might not be a place to use VOBblanker. On the other hand, maybe a full version of DVDfab might get the job done without any other software (thinking about ARccOS)

If you purchased AnyDVD and Clone there is really not a reason to purchase DVDFab. AnyDVD breaks all the new encryptions and now has a ripper for hard to do disks built in, have not tried this new add on myself. You can also run AnyDVD in the background with DVD Decrypter and then always run the files through VobBlanker. I have used AnyDVD with Decrypter and VobBlanker and it works very well.
