I was trying to make a backup for my grandson of Bambi 2. When I use DVD Shrink it hangs up at 10% Analyzing. Because sometimes scratches occur when he or his friends use his DVD's I usually try to back them up so he can use the backup & not the original. This is the first children's DVD that seems to have some protection. Can someone help me?

Anydvd costs money, but why pay for something when it can easily be done using readily available free tools.

@PWANJO
If you want to get the job done for free using free tools that can really help you understand the process better, follow arniebear suggestion. If you're will to spend some money (why?), well AnyDVD is the way to go

@johnl123

Thanks, I usually try to recommend the free programs, if they want to pay out money they will eventually get around to purchasing AnyDVD. But so far there are still enough free progs that work.

Thanks Arniebear & others for your comments. I downloaded DVD Fab Decrypter & ripped the Bambi 2 dvd. I 'm not sure what to do from here. I do have DVD Shrink-latest version & I have the latest version of Imgburn. Can U please explain to me how to get it burned because now I believe I have an Audio file & Video file saved on ripping to use for that purpose.

Since you have an a VTS file you and want to burn with ImgBurn you are going to have to have Shrink create an iso file. Just run it through Shrink and tell it to create an iso file to HDD and then open ImgBurn to burn.

i'm well aware that AnyDVD costs money. that's why i said

for some who don't back up alot of movies it's not worth the cost and the freeware is fine. but for those that do alot, it can save a few steps and alot of time when going through the backup process.

some just like the challenge of being able to do it on the cheap side while others don't and want a simple straightforward way of doing it.

i once swore i'd never use AnyDVD, but as newer encryptions arrived i tired of the extra steps required using just free proggies.

I appreciate the info from guys in the know. I got the backup done ok following your steps arniebear. It works fine. However, after I created the ISO file with DVD Shrink & went to burn the ISO image, it first came up & said "lock Volume Failed"- "Unable to lock volume for exclusive access". I clicked on Ignore & it still burned successfully. Can U tell me how important that message was & how I correct it?
Also, I own "Flightplan" but couldn't seem to rip it for a backup. I didn't try the latest version of DVD Fab Decrypter. Can I back this up the same way as I did Bambi 2? Your help would be appreciated.

What program are you using to burn your file with, is it Decrypter because yes the error your are getting for the lock volume is important. It means that your drive is not locked and that any interuption by another program can screw up the burn. Yes you can do Flightplan the same way.

Edit: Just looked back and see that you are using ImgBurn. Are you using the latest ver.

Unable to lock volume for exclusive access

Error code:

DVD drive in use by another application

Problem:

You are trying to burn with DVD Decrypter. After that you have pressed the OK button in the backup section of DVD Shrink it gives you the above error code.

Solution:

Another program is currently using the drive. You need to find out what it is and shut it down!

The only way I know of finding out what else has a 'handle' open to the drive is by using Process Explorer. Load it up and click 'Find' -> 'Find Handle...'

The type 'cdrom' and click 'search'

See if it comes up with any results

If it doesnt, try searching for the drive letter of that drive - i.e. 'F:'

If it finds something, click on it in the search window. The main window should then highlight the process / 'File' entry that contains the handle to the drive. You can right click -> close the handle if you like, or just close the entire application, it's up to you.

Turn off any packet writing software running, like InCD from Nero, or whatever Roxio calls theirs. It holds the drive in a state that allows for the drag and drop of files to a CDRW, it needs to be deactivated for DVD Shrink be able to use the drive. Use the task manager to kill off processes one by one if you want to really know which task it is in a methodical way. Credit: cynthia

What other programs are you running? Make sure you have set the interface in ImgBurn to SPTI. This error applies for ImgBurn as it is the same as Decrypter only updated by LUK!

Process Explorer

I guess DVD Decrypter must have been running in the backround. I thought it was deleted when IMGBURN was installed. I tried it again & I didn't get that error.The backup worked fine.

I did however rip FLIGHTPLAN with the latest version of DVD FAB DECRYPTER 2.9.7.2 & it said it was ripped successfully7. However when I opened DVDSHRINK & chose "Open Files", then chose where the temp files had gone, & clicked on DVD, I got this error as I believe it started to create the ISO file .

DVDSHRINK encountered an error. Failure to read file "E:\dvdfab temp files\DVD\Video_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB". Invalid access to memory location. Can U help me arniebear? Have I done something wrong? I do appreciate the time U have spent with your info.

Here is a guide by a member named alkohol that will show you how to do troublesome movies like The Fog, Flightplan, The Cave etc. This will work for all of the new encrypted movies.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/293994

Download VobBlanker you can get it here if you do not have it.

http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm

I know this must be trying on you, but you are almost there and just think how easy it will be to do all these hard ones in the future. These are all free apps so this is a good way to go. Good luck, post back if you have more problems. Helping is no problem :)

Well,arniebear, I gave it a shot. I used VOBBLANKER 2.1.0.0 to handle the rip file created with DVDFABDECRYPTER. When it finished, it said, "Finished. No Errors, 0 Warnings". I then closed it out.

So I opened DVD Shrink & opened the file folder designated "VOBBLANKER FLIGHT PLAN\VIDEO_TS. I clicked on it & as it started to ANALYZE it came up with the same error as before.

Failed to read file E:\VOBBLANKER FLIGHTPLAN\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB. Invalid access to memory location.

I was sure I had used VOBBLANKER correctly as when it processed the ripped file, it came up with NoErrors, 0 Warnings. I'm really disappointed.

What do U think--I do have to use DVD Shrink to create the ISO file, do I not? Then use IMGBURN to burn the DVD.

I decided to try ENCODE 2 on the VOBBLANKER VIDEO_TS File. As it started to encode it came up with "An unknown error occured in the VOB encoder". So now I'm really frustrated, put a lot of time into it, with no positive results.

Have you tried doing the main movie only and not the whole disk. The problem with this movie is that there is a blank 7 to 8 second delay before the movie starts and this is what screws up the file. If you can get it to analyze then choose movie only and use start and end frame to advance just until the movie starts you should be able to get this movie. This is a tough movie and many people have had difficulties doing it.

Try this, uninstall DVDFab Decrypter completely from you system, redownload it and reinstall and rerip, then run through VobBlanker and finally DVD Shrink.

It sounds like DVDFab didn't get enough of the bad stuff off the disc the first go round.

@PWANJO

I have already answered your question via my thread "The answer to THE FOG", but I guess it won't hurt to reply it in here as well. Anyways, below is what I said. In addition, I've never seen/experienced any dvds/movies that my "DVDFAB Decrypter + VobBlanker method" can not handle, regardless if it's ARccOS or RipGuard protections. It has proven to work 100% flawlessly.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT HERE: make sure you don't run/have AnyDVD, DVD43 or any kind of cracking engines running in the background when you're ripping the movie with DVDFAB Decrypter. The same thing apply to VobBlanker when you're "processing" the VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker. Because if you had AnyDVD, DVD43 or any kind of cracking engines running while you're running VobBlanker to "process", then YOU ARE LIKELY to end up with some kind of errors, such as "unsynchronized VOB, file is too small (1 or 2 GB only), file is too big, some parts are missing, missing scenes or VTS, invalid data structure, etc." when you load/import into DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2.

So my advise is to TURN OFF AnyDVD, DVD43 or any other cracking engines when you're using DVDFAB Decrypter to rip and when you're processing the VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker 2.1.0.0. Another recommend way is to disconnect from the net and Norton to prevent from getting updates cause that is likely to trigger any glitches as well.

Good luck!!

Thanks Arniebear & Localeng as well as Alckohol for all your help. I did uninstall DFDFAB Decrypter & downloaded it again & used Alkohol's "Answer To THE FOG" steps on his thread to successfully burn FLIGHTPLAN. Your one, two, three combo for successfully burning FLIGHTPLAN, THE FOG,etc., Alkohol, worked superbly to do the job. I will try my original ,THE FOG program to see if I can back it up as well. I feel very confident I'll be able to with your great instructions.

I left U a note, Alkohol on your thread re "Answer To The FOG".
