I found a PS2 on a wall yesterday!

It plays AudioCDs fine, it plays DVDVideos fine, it plays proper PS1 GameCDs fine, it wont play backup PS1 GameCDs ("please insert a Playstaion or Playstation2 disc") so its not 'chipped' (which is to be expected..)

However, The console/drive makes a mysterious clicking noise when it trys to load a PS2 game disc. The console freezes with no graphics.

I think its not able to read the disc correctly but it reads and plays DVDVideos okay..

PS: I'm not near it now but thought I would ask around anyway...!
PPS: Video and codecs is normally my thing so apologies for stupidity...

Hmm, the laser can be re-aligned, which is a pretty simple process - http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars

As for the graphics not loading and freezing.. hmm no idea. Internally damaged or something, but again it can be fixed. Take it to a store, see what they can do and for what price.

I think what I have probly found is a 'more trouble than its worth', 'only works half the time' PS2...

I spent the evening playing TEKKEN TAG (not my choice of game - just what I found kicking around my shared house...)

but YAAAAY!

The advice on the silver ribbon is well noted in most of the threads so thanks for the warning mike

I'll be back here if I need more help - thanks all at AD

if you have a IDE Hard Drive Laying around you could get yourself the PS2 network adaptor use a MC Exploit (if you know someone with a modded ps2 that can install the exploit for ya) of HDLOADER and run your PS2 games off the hard drive

Its a bit of a frankenstein job as the last owner appears to have cut some large holes in the bottom and wired up some snazzy blue lighting in there, so no such luck!

ha! no actually it was sat on top of the wall so well done for pointing out my terrible grammer - there's a 'no-prize' in post for you today!

Well people it would appear to be a 100% working PS2 afterall.
It is a bit of a frankenstein job as the last owner appears to have cut some large holes in the bottom and wired up some snazzy blue lighting in there. Which make me think it may also be chipped.

So my next question is: Should i be able to pay copied PS1 games on a chipped PS2 - I dont think so as I'm sure PS2's run PS1 games in an onboard emulator, but I'm after a definative answer.

Can anyone help?

Depends on which chip was fitted.

That is what i hoped (As it wont play backedup PS1 games)

If I just do a DVD copy of a PS2 game with, say, DVDDecrypter will i need to do anything else to get it to play (if the console is chipped). I notice that some threads suggest you need to modify the game itself to play on chipped systems...

I suspect you are going to to give the same answer, so I may just have to do it and find out...

Thanks for all your help mike!

Hmm, I think you mean rebuilding but this is only really required for Swap Magic.. the backups you have tried.. which brand have they been written to?

Try and get some 8x Verbatim or Tuiyo Yuden DVD-R and burn at 4x ((Always half the maximum) and it should work.
If you live in the UK you can get some from - http://www.svp.co.uk
If you live in the US you can get some from - http://www.supermediastore.com/

And no problem!

Mike,

The only backups I have tried are PS1 backups, that always run okay on my chipped PS1, but as you say this very likely depends on the way the PS2 has been chipped (if it has been..).

Aside from that, i think i have found the reason it had been disposed - it appears some times the laser doesnt return to home and so causes problems reading the disc, requiring taking the whole unit apart and manually 'pushing' the laser home. grr...

I think now I will stop asking questions and just use DVDDecrypter to ISO and copy of the first (less than 4.3GB) game I can dig up and see what happens...

Take a look here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/303681-

I think you will have to re-align the laser.

I think you need to press down on the rest button to activate the chip. I remember this when I had a PS2 mod that plays NSTC backups. Both PSONE and PS2 games.

I don't remember what chip it was. My brother n law installed it for me.

Now that the ps2 is broken, I'm force to use Harddrive Advance.

Yes, it varies from chip to chip but it tends to be similar. ie. Hold down eject button for 5 seconds when turning on.. etc.

Also, you should check eBay, I managed to get a old-style black PS2, hardly used for £20 !

Speakin of moddin and Fat PS2 being broken...

The Fat Ps2 warrenty seal thing is dumb if u ask me. Way easy to open ur PS2 and have the seal still look as if not removed. I broke my Ps2 when i tried to modd it my slef and figured out that soldering is not that easy when ur solderin needle is twice as big as the little spots on the mother board. But yea totally melted some stuff and PS2 is fried so i kinda took it back to the store where i bought it from and it so happens that the SLim PS2 was just out so i traded it in for that.... =D
