i have the combo dvd player where it plays dvd's and vhs tapes as well as it can burn/record to both. Can I burn a dvd from a VHS that is protected? I have an error that shows up and it says that you cannot copy it. Is there any way to break the protection on the VHS tape? Thanks.

i hooked my vhs upto my tv card and used that to record my films from vhs.
Maybe quicker for you to just download the film.
Try torrentspy.com and use a bittorrent client to download.
Backups of films that u have the original of is not illegal.

or try covering the missing "tab" on the VHS with cellotape.
This makes the tape read/ write, just do get confused or you will write over the tape lol

No. There isn't a way to get a combo VHS/DVD unit to copy a protected VHS tape to DVD. Since the combo unit is in control of both playback and recording there's no place for you to intervene to get around the copy protection.

If you have a copy protected VHS tape and you want to burn it to DVD you need a standalone VCR to play it and a separate destination device (PC or DVD recorder) to record it. Then you can intercept the video with a video stablizer, for example, before recording it.

Also, there are some standalone DVD recorders that will bypass analog copy protection and there are lots of PC capture cards that will also disregard analog copy protection to allow you to record protected tapes.
