I find that DVD-R works on everything I'v tried, DVD+R works on everything except my PS2 and DVD-/+RW doesn't have a very good compatability rate. Also go for Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim Adv. AZO. :)

All good media, paul mentioned,

but it really does depend alot on what type of burner/firmware/software you use.

In general terms I've found (as paul mentioned) Taiyo yuden and verbatims to be excellent.

If you have an older DVD player or Ps2 (early v4 etc) then a lot use DVD+R booktyped to DVD-ROM which tricks the player into reading the disc as if a true DVD-ROM was in the machine. (this is required if your using DVD+R disc's on older PS2)

Having said that Maxell Ritek R03 DVD+R X8 have given me my best scans lately (strangely enuff).

Any DVD+ booktyped DVD-ROM should play in any standalone player. But use quality media so your backups will last for a long time.

PC: 2.8GHZ PIV, 120 GB HD, 1 GIG ECC RAM, GeForce FX 5600, Sound Blaster Audigy 2

CD Burner/DVD Reader: Lite-On LTC-48161H - Firmware KHOR
DVD Burner: BenQ 1640 - Firmware BSRB

I'd agree with dvdnoobie and ashj when they mention booktyping.

I always use DVD+ and booktype. They play on anything after that.
You don't necessarily require top class (and top price) discs either. I've used cheapo ones and the booktyping does the trick.

As for the more expensive discs lasting longer, I think that's still to be proven.

K then burn the same thing on a TY or Verb AZO and one on CMCmag,
leave for about a month and see how the differential results fly on behalf of CMCMAG and last on TY/verb :)

If you got a BenQ 1620 or 1640, Definitely the plus format and booktyped to dvd-rom.

If you have an I/O Magic 16x empa drive,Definitely the dash format.

If you have an HP 640C lightscribe,Definitely the dash format.

Different models prefer different formats. I don't even bother with the dash because my booktyped backups, onto the plus media, from all 3 of my benqs definitely kicks some major a**! The dash don't even come close

Now on my lower quality drives, the dash format definitely outperformed the plus, but those drive cannot booktype.

Just make sure you use quality media. Your drives will thank you for it by giving you a near perfect quality backup during playback.

I've found that memosux have the best compatabiltiy with my coffee tables. Not a coffee table they won't go on. Unfortunately they leave a center ring because of that damn circle in the middle. Heck they can't even make good coasters. Ritek G05's I believe are going to give these memosux a run for their money.

Stick with +R and booktype if you can. Otherwise use what's compatable with your burner and standalones.

TY's and Verb's are top of the line.

Just my .000000001 cents...

CoreBus:
Your sony dru-720A is actually a re-badged Lite-on SOHW-1673s. This drive should have the bitsetting capability to booktype. You'll have to go to Lite-on's main website to find the utility for the booktyping if you need that option. If you run into a stand alone player that gives you a: No disc inserted/dirty disc/or region code, this booktyping may work.

I find many ty's in local media. Sony +1x-8x and fuji +8x has the MID code Yuden000-T02 on the spindles that say made in japan. Reports are coming here about ty-g02 on some of the japanese sony dash 1x-8x. I know ty also makes some of the japanese Fuji dash 8x.

Hitachi is another great quality manufacturer from japan. You can find them on both formats of Maxell 8x on the spindles that say made in japan.

All this ty media can be had for under 30 cents each, and searching through all the spindles at stores like:
Best buy
Office Depot
Office Max
Staples

Walmart also has some sony tys and maxell hitachi. Just gotta look those labels over good.Their price will be higher.Around $25 for a spindle of 50 sony. Way too much for me,but when staples runs out,I take the ad over to walmart for a price match.

The taiwanese maxells aren't that bad, unless you live up in canada. Here in the usa, most of the taiwanese maxell 8x will code out as ritek media. Same with the Office depot 8x media. Up in canada, reports of cmags are coming in from those taiwanese maxells.

I'd take the Japanese maxells in the 10 pack over the taiwanese 10 pack because they will be the exact same price for both. Same way with spindles, because those stores I listed will have both japanese and taiwanese spindles all mixed together.

Take the maxells. If they don't have the hitachis, then I'll wait for Office Depots sale on their brand name 8x media. Both are made by Ritek-R03 on the +8x,but price is cheaper for the Office depot riteks vs. the Maxell riteks.

The 16x verbatims are looking great. Made by Mitsubishi-in taiwan/india/and singapore: All great stuff. Advanced metal azo dye. I picked up 350 of them at Office Max the other week for $15 a spindle of 50. Another sale is due very soon.

Office Max has a sale this week on the sony 25 packs for $8. Posts of Yuden000-T02 are on some of the +1x-8x spindles that say made in japan. SonyD11 will be on the taiwanese sony +1x-8x.

I'm the same as Corebus here in the UK. I'd never heard of TY until I became a member here.

I had to buy mine on-line as I've never seen them 'in the flesh' When I did purchase on-line, they turned up as Verbatims!

As for burning as booktype, I'd recommend using DVD Decrypter. It's so easy!

Yeah they'll be Verbatim TY's same as I use thanks to creaky for the pointers. Take it they are Verbatim advanced AZO, spindle of 25, media code TYG02 and on the inner rim it says in really faint letters GG000*** I'v had very successful burns with these as I live in the UK and these are as close as were gonna get for TY's. :)
