For bitsetting I would go with a benq or litey since they both have booktyping utilities available. They are also both compatable with Nero disc quality scan.

Get ya a benq 1620 or 1640. booktype the plus format to dvd-rom and you won't have to worry about buying dash media!
They do love:
MCC-003
MCC-004
Yuden000-02
Maxell-002-00
Ritek-R03
In fact,I haven't even encountered any brand of plus format that they didn't like! AML/CMAGS/Moser Bauer- all burned ok,but my stand alones would pick out those crappy discs.
99.5%+ success rate! You won't have to worry about landfill space with these babies.Very few coasters. I get about 1 out of 400+ burns, and my original 1620 is still going strong at over 3000+ backups!
Benq 1620: Booktype using nero6 along with dvd shrink/or Qsuite 2.0
Benq 1640: Booktype using Qsuite 2.0
Newegg was out of them last weekend when I went searching.
I only have nero6.0.0.21b oem so I don't have the nerospeed test scan. Dvdinfopro works great and on the MCC-004 verbs,I have to burn them at least 8x to get fewest errors. 12x aren't much worse, but the 2.4x and 4x are the worst scans from those verbs.
Excellent quality Booktyping drives for under $45
Good luck on finding a stand alone that won't recognize their booktyped backups!

Although I agree with saugmon on the 1620 and 1640. Don't waste your time. Your not going to find them except for eBay where they want $80 or I believe I read micro center had them (2 left) for $80. You can get the BenQ DW1655 for $55 w shipping or less now (OEM) or wait for the DW1650 to come out shortly. I believe the liteon's are also very good and can booktype like the BenQ.

IDE cable:
Some of the drives will come with a flat cable. Use it. It should be a 40 pin/80 wire ribbon which is needed. The older ribbons may be 40 pin/40 wire. Difficult to tell them apart. Look at how thick the wires are. 40 wire will be thicker than the 80 wire.
I use 40 pin/80 wire round cable on my main pc for better air flow. On my backup athlon 3000+,I use the standard 40 pin/80 wire flat cable.
The Plextor 740A is a re-badged benq 1640. Phillips is also using rebadged benqs for for some of their drives. I paid $38 total for my 1640.I'd like to get another one for my single drive pc so I can get better control of the burn speed. These benqs will overburn most 8x media to 12x and 16x if their burn settings are left at max.
Taiyouser: Did you download Qsuite 2.0 yet/
It'll control that overburning as well as do the booktyping. I can't get my q-scan test to work, but oh well. These are super drives!

i got my 3 Benq dw-1640s for about $50 each back in the days...newegg charges tax for me in CA and it wasn't free shipping at the time of purchase..but, it's WELL spent $$ in my opinion for a great drive~ :)
i tend to buy everything in "bulk" whether it be media or dvd burners, if i like something, i'm excessive on my purchases...i also have the Liteon SOHW-1633S and the SOHW-1693S, both great burners and also VERY good scanning drives...but, it's hard to beat the quality of Benq drives and their overall performance with all things considered~ :)
as to the IDE cables, there is a very good discussion going on in my thread, i'm about to make a purchase before nite's end too for the round cables mort81 was speaking of in that link...
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/10/296925
@mort81
i think i am going to buy them from coolerguys.com as the price for the coolermaster and other "brand name" round cables given by bunnyrip are significantly higher despite the free 2day fedex shipping~ i thank bunnyrip for the link, don't get me wrong, but since i'm going to buy 5-6 cables, i don't wanna spend over $60 +tax just for cables~ i get slapped w/ sales tax in CA from them too, as per my reasoning for buying things in "bulk", imma get 5 round cables for future use when i rebuild my other computers~ :)

Marty:
How does coolerguys.com ship? UPS/fed-ex/ maybe DHL?

Gary,
I can't remember for sure. Been a while since I ordered from them. Why don't you have them ship to where you work?
