Hi, I've read on here several peoples problems with slow encoding and I've tried all the advice given. I've done the following:
-uninstalled the Primary and Secondary ?'s to make sure in DMA mode
-uniinstalled & reinstalled DVD Shrink
-Downloaded AVG-had a trojan horse-deleted it
-Downloaded Spybot-got ride of stuff
-Downloaded CrapCleaner-deleted crap
-Updated AdAware and let it do its thing
-Disk Cleanup
-Regular Cleanup
-Defrag
-Deleted old programs I don't use anymore.

I've tried everything I could find that anyone on here has suggested to do and I'm still at 9+ hours for encoding.

Any Ideas Anyone?????

I have HP 1300MHz 1.3 GHz 256 MB Last Defrag stated 46% free space
HP cd-writer 630c use Imation DVD-R 8x

It did this last week and once I did the DMA thing and uninstalled and let them reinstall when computer started up again, I reinstalled DVD Shrink and it copied just fine another 2-3 discs.

I've used this process for about 1 year with no problems. I've installed no new programs.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Heather

Your specs are pretty low so an upgrade would really help. What do you have the quality settings set at? What is the compression ratio? Are you waiting for it? My Shrink always starts out a bit slow but then gets faster a time goes on.

Did you check and make sure shrink isn't set to run in low priority mode to improve multitasking. Goto edit--preferences, it'll be in the preferences tab, make sure it's not checked.

Make sure your drive's firmware is upto date, you can check here:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php

If the disk is scratched, this will increase the encoding time.

Make sure you enable any turbo or speed read mode your drive may have, they usually default to a lower speed (if your drive has this feature, check the manual).

Another possibility is that your drive might be starting to show it's age, if so it's time for a new one.

Okay, not sure if this is what your asking for, if not...tell me how to find the info you need.

Compression is set at Automatic
It said 56.1% after I analysed a disc

Target DVD Size is set at DVD-5 (4.7GB)

I do wait to see if it is going to speed up but it doesn't anymore.

Did you mean update my computer in your entry? Like more memory or what exactly???? Sorry, I can run the programs but know nothing about the computer.

Thanks,

Heather

Have the same problem...ripping and burning with DVD Decrypter is still fine with times of 12 to 15 minutes or so. The problem is with DVD Shrink where analyzing now takes up to 10 minutes (used to take around 1 minute) and encoding can take up to 3 hours and over (used to be less than 1 hour...always). I even went so far as to install a new hard drive. With only XP, DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and a few other necessary programs installed, it still runs slow.
Drives are DMA. I really don't know why all of a sudden it would stop working. Are there any other good programs similar to DVD Shrink out there?

Recode by Nero and CloneDVD by Slysoft.

It sounds like a conflict somewhere in the puters, there is no reason that DVD Shrink should just stop working or just start behaving erratically out of the blue...Something has to have been DL'd or changed in the PC environment to cause the problems.

@hbabab

Yes a memory upgrade is definately needed by you. Windows itself will take up to 128mb of ram just to run the OS. Your drive will take 128mb to 512mb (like my LG does) just to run, so that leaves you with virtually nothing left to process with.

I would recommend a gig of ram, 512mb is considered minimum.

This will definately help.

Ok I've had this problem too and the only thing that worked for me was this. And this works ALL the time. The following was copied from:

http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/dvdguide005.html

If your DMA settings revert back to PIO after rebooting:
You can try tweaking the registry settings to reset the error count. Be very careful here.

Backup your registry before proceeding.

Run REGEDIT.
Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances. You have to go through these subkeys and check the DriverDesc value until you find the proper IDE channel.
Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.

Open Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, congratulations, you've made it (at least until the next time Windows disables DMA)

Good luck all...
