Some DVD players, don't read burned discs. One of my players reads EVERY back-up I have, but another only reads about half of them...It's simply a compatibility issue, (for the most part atleast), I use DVD Shrink to make my back-ups though...

What is the brand name and model# of your dvd burner?

What is the brand name/format/and speed rate of your blank media?

Not only can standalones be picky on certain formats, but also sensitive to different burners and certain media.

I had a sonydvp ns-325 and that baby played anything you slapped in her. I do have backups from 6 different pc drives and a tv recorder and I can see a major compatability difference between their backups.

Here's some things to check for to get the best stand alone playability:

Quality media-the right format- Try opposite format-test in all stand alones.Go with the format that performs the best.
4x burn speed,or burn to how your scans look.
Backup target of 4360 mbs to keep that burn away from the edge.
Burn software
Paper/sticker labels
Quality burner/updated firmware

You're probably getting some sort of no disc inserted error. Format and quality of your media is the first thing to check. There's another way to bypass both the plus and dash format. It's called booktyping. Only certain drives can do this and with the plus format media only. This booktyping actually fools some of the picky stand alones into playing them. Booktyping-also known as bit-setting,is the altering of the plus format to dvd-rom,making them have a better chance of compatability. The answer to the model# question will help us determine if yours has that capability.

Hi, I use the SONY DVP-NS50p at the recommendation of someone here in previous thread. This $79 dollar player plays my everything and is sold in black and silver. Got mine from Circuit City. I use mostly Verbs and SONY 8x -R and recently experimented with Verb DVD-DL +R Amazing disc. Whole season 2 Dave Chappelle (Original 3 disc) on 1 dual layer which also plays in my SONY player.

I bought a $23 symphonic dvd player from a store called Odd Lots, also known as Big Lots. I picked it up because I lost the remote for my Magnavox $37 wal-mart special. That $23 stand alone plays everything from all my burners with the exception of the plus backups from my HP 640C lightscribe. These were Verbatim +16x MCC-004 which are some of the best I have used, yet that hp drive's backups totally suck a** on stand alone players=weak burner! I use that drive to read and light scribe, but it's backup burning days are over!

The remote also worked for the magnavox,so I have an extra drive to pow around with!
