Problems with LG GSA-4163B

I hope someone out there can help me with this because I'm on the verge of pulling my hair out.
I have a LG GSA-4163B using Microsoft drivers version 5.1.2535.0 and running firmware A105. The drive will read/burn CDs and read DVDs without problems but if I try to burn a DVD I get can't get it to recognise the blank disk. I'm using Nero version 6.3.0.5 and running Windows XP Professional version 5.01.2600. The drive is set as a master on the secondary IDE channel with a Matishta DVD Rom SR-8583 as the mater on the first IDE channel and I'm trying to use Maxell 4.7gb 1-8X DVD-R discs. I know the disks are ok because I've used them on friends drives sucessfully. I've tried using different software (B's Clip Recorder 5) and I've tried updating the firmware to no avail.

Hi there,
Latest firmware for your burner is v1.06

You Nero is quite old also, latest is v6.6.0.18 (or v7.0.5.4)
Maybe it's not licking those 8x media.
Firmware upgrades sometimes helps for that !
Then provide us a full Nero log, we will see what's going on !

Thanks for the help cougar_ii.
I downlaoded and installed the new firmware.
I ran a transfer rate test in the Nero analysis program. The results were:
Speed: 6X CLV (5.87X Average)
Elapsed Time 10.16
I also ran the create data disc test, and the results were:
Speed: 6X CLV (5.96 Average)
Elapsed Time 10.06
I hope this helps.

After you updated the firmware did you try again? But we can still take a look at that log to see if anything is amiss! Go to c:program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory.log. Post the last one - your log are separated by:
=====*** Nero Burning Rom, History File *** =====
Just be sur eto edit out the serial # - they begin w/ 1A.

I'm not at home now so I can't upload the Nero log, but over the weekend I tried a few thing that might shed some light on the problem.
I put a my Dad's drive that burns DVDs fine on his PC into my PC and the same problem occured, so it's not a problem with the drive.
Also I tried swapping round the various IDE connections to no avail which suggests that its not to do with how the drive is connected up.
Finally my Dad has the same version of Windows and the same drive and no problems so I don't think its operating system related.
Also I found another thread that seems to have a similar problem:

Worrying there dosen't seem to be a solution though.

I have this drive too. GSA-4163B, The Latest Firmware I see on LG's USA site is Version A105. Anyway, I have No Problems with this drive at all. I have used those Maxell Gold Faced DVD-R 8x ,
they're RITEK G05. I use 4x speed and they turn out Great!
Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

I too am having samiliar problem as randal, I have the same drive I have A106 firmware don't ask me how. I had this problem before and I was given a link to get the A106 firmware. I was then told to go into device manager and switch from pio to DMA on and then unistall the controller and reboot. It helped the last time but this time it doesn't seem to be working. My Nero won't even let me click on burn if I try to burn a dvd. I'm going to try and uninstall Nero and reinstall. I will let you know if it works.

Also make sure you don't have Nero InCD installed. If you do, then uninstall and get and run the InCD Clean Tool from the Nero site. Also make sure you don't have Roxio installed. There's a Cleaning Tool for that also somewhere on the net.
