Hello. :)

I've been trying to get perfect results DVD copying and DVD authoring. I've experimented quite a lot and written out what I do to remind myself which methods work best. (See below). Any comments on this would be very much appreciated.

Two questions particularly:

1) I still find the finished DVDs will sometimes stick/freeze while playing or jam while forward or backward searching. Any ideas on this would be great as I can't think what else to do to avoid these problems? (I don't use labels on the discs anymore and I use high quality media (Ritek at present).

2) When I finally burn to disc I usually burn from an ISO or a Nero nrg image file. Which works best, doing this or burning from a VIDEO_TS folder to the DVD?

Thanks for your help. This is one of the few places I've found where expert help is really reliable. :)

This is how I do things. (These methods work with my system and Pioneer stand-alone player):

DVD Authoring

From video files (avi, mpeg, mov, wmv, etc) transcoded in NeroVision (1 pass is usually OK but consider high quality and 2 pass settings) to DVD file structure in folder, then Nero Recode (set to advanced analysis & high quality mode) to Nero image file (nrg), then Nero Burning Rom to DVD.

Avoid compression, check all settings, turn off all other programs including anti-virus, read at 8x max (where applicable) and write at 4x max. Do nothing else on the PC while the entire process works through.

Check log files for errors and driver recognition between each stage where a log is available. Re-do if there are any errors or ??s for driver versions.

DVD Copying

DVDFab Decrypter to file structure in folder. (Even if newer encryption-breaking isn?t required, burning files to a folder first seems to result in a finished DVD less likely to pixelate or freeze).

Then Nero Recode (set to advanced analysis & high quality mode) to Nero image file (nrg), then Burning Rom to DVD. Or DVD Shrink to ISO image file, then Nero Burning Rom to DVD.

Avoid compression (where possible), check all settings, turn off all other programs including anti-virus, read at 8x max and write at 4x max. Do nothing else on the PC while the entire process works through.

Check log files for errors and driver recognition between each stage where a log is available. Re-do if there are any errors or ??s for driver versions.

My answers:
1) These issues usually occur when you burn the DVD too fast. Try to use 4X or 6X if your PC is not very new (>6 months old). If you have a brand new PC with good hardware you may want to try and push it to 8X.
I would avoid 16X even if you have 16X burner and good 16X media.
Make sure you have plenty of RAM available (minimum 512MB total and at least 100-150MB free)
2) It should not matter. Using VIDEO_TS may include few "small" files that may need to be cached for optimum performance. You can set Nero to cache even relatively large files, just to play it safe. I never had a problem though.
If you need to pick one, .iso or .nrg are best since you'll burn only one file so there is no possibility of slower data rate due to multiple seek on the hard disk.

One more comment: check the suggested media for your DVD player: even if you use good media, they may be "too new" or for some reason they may not work at best with your DVD player.
Fujifilm are recommended by many here but they don;t work very well with my player. I got great results with Sony and Verbatim. Never tried Ritek.

You said you wanted some suggestions/comments:~)!
I really don't know why the extra step with Nero Recode. I could be wrong, but if you convert the your AVI file to a DVD-5 in the first place, processing again with Nero, you have another chance for some Read/Write errors to occur and bad burn to happen. If that works fine for you, great, just don't seem to find the usefulness.

I think many here would call Ritek second class maybe. Still good, but not the best. Some would say is top notch for them.I use it, just because I bought some very, very cheap, some Maxell X8. Some people will report great success with it. I guess it all comes down to burner, firmware, preferrences, past experiences.

I see you mentioned about burn speed, not multitasking, quality settings...How about your firmware, is that up to date?

I can see what you mean about the unnecessary stage. I'll try skipping that. I'd got it into my head that genrerating an ISO or NRG would somehoww help. Sort of smooth things out!

My firmware is up to date.

This (below) appears to be major problem. Perhaps a software bug. It is really puzzling. Then again if I skip the ISO stage, it's not so important. But I'd still like to understand why? ??

How do you turn off layer 2 when creating an NRG image with Recode?

Formerly, in earlier versions when creating a nrg image for a DVD-5, recode would make a single layer image for the single layer disc. Now with v.2.2.6.17 of Recode, when burning a to a DVD-5, the second layer (a blue indicator is shown) starts at about 50 percent.

The problem is when you burn the nrg image to a DVD-5 and then watching on a standalone there is a jump when viewing at, I suppose, a layer break. In the earlier versions there was no blue indicator showing the second layer being burned nor was there a jump at the 50 percent mark.

I have the layer break and PUOP's ticked for removal in the options. I am not burning to DL DVD's... just single layer.

It is as though a layer break is inserted when the progress bar shows a blue second layer burning.

This seems to imply that burning the last stage from an ISO to the DVD is worthwhile.

"If you need to pick one, .iso or .nrg are best since you'll burn only one file so there is no possibility of slower data rate due to multiple seek on the hard disk."

Slower data rate. Is that risky?

It's taken my ages to work all this out. But I want it perfect. I don't see why my disc shouldn't be. I should ahve said "OK media" for Ritek shouldn't I? :)

Thanks for info so far.

What is the answer to this layer 2 problem please?

I am not familiar with the "layer 2 " problem: never had it, nor I ever had to burn a DVD9.
What's the size of th e.iso (or .nrg) file? I use DVD Srhink to ... shrink my DVDs: I don't like Nero Recode interface (but that's a very personal opinion). I read that Nero 7 has Nero Recode 3 which claims to be the fastest recoding tool worldwide: maybe you want to use the 21 day trial?

About the data rate: I don;t know what is exactly the problem, but when I burn at 8X on my USB drive, even though the drive has buffer-underrun protection and even though the idsc is actually burned at 8X, the results are worse (by far) than 6X and 4X. I use Verbatim certified 16X disks, so I doubt it's a media issue.
I think (but that's only an assumption) that the data rate of the USB port is not constant and that, somehow, affects the quality of burning. Or, maybe, it's just my burner.

My point was that if you have small files then there'll have to be some seeking to read them. Nero (and I think most burning softwares) can cache the small files in memory so that the speed won't be affected.
With a recent computer, I believe this is hardly an issue, but if you use a laptop (like I do) and not the newest DVD burner (like I do) this may just add up to a lot of other factors and cause problems.
So creating a .iso or .nrg file is mostly unnecessary, but if you want to get the smallest chances for imperfections, then you should go for it. My opinion, of course.

I too have concluded that creating an ISO helps avoid imperfections.

Thanks for your help. Appreciated.

About the layer 2 problem - I'm trying to burn less than 4GB onto a 4.7 standard disc - no compression or double layer needed, nor DL media being used - but Recode just ignores the "remove layer break" check mark and starts "writing layer 2" half way through writing the ISO.

I'm using Nero Recode 2.2.6.17. Has anyone else spotted this? I think it's a fault/bug in Nero.

Advice still needed. :)

Not sur eif it'll help: you may want to try DVD shrink: the code is practically the same as Nero Recode.
DVD shrink also has an option for removing layer break.
If it works fine, then it could be a bug in Nero Recode 2.
If you install the trial version of Nero 7 you'll get Nero Recode 3: if it is a bug, chances are Nero 3 has it fixed.

Are you using the latest version of Nero (6.6.1.4d)?

I am using Nero 6.6.0.18

I don't want the nwer one as I've been reading that it ahs problems as does Nero 7.

I ahve updated to the latest NeroVision package (that relats to Nero 6) which is 3.1.0.25. I had 3.1.0.21 before and the layer 2 problem is the same.

I do use Shrink as well and that does work, but i'd like to fix this Nero problem as I sometimes want to use the options that has.

Not wanting Nero 7, is it possible to get an installation of Recode 3 on it's own or does anyone know a registry tweak to fix the "remove layer break" bug? (If it is a bug).

Other ideas gratefully received.

I'm curious now to get to the bottom of this. :)

I don't think you can install Nero Recode 3 without installing Nero 7, but I have ot tried it myslef so I'm not sure.
Did you try uninstall and clean the Nero installation and then re-installing it?
On Nero's website you can download utilitys to clean completely any info related to previous Nero instllations: here's the link
