Hi guys, I've been lurking for a few days. Been looking for a Burner for about a month, finally bought a BenQ DW1655 OEM after researching and reading the vast amounts of recommendations for this burner made on these forums. BenQ DW1655 I found to be the most appealing for me especially with lightscribe and the booktype options plus additional usage reviews such as burn speeds and it's quiteness. I still have to burn media to get the the whole feel of this burner. Until then I can't say too much about this burner besies what I've read. Which brings me to my main question for the moment. It seems that there's a lot of great reviews and recommendations for 1)TY's 2)Verbatims. Going by this I'm planning on purchasing the Verbatim as my first ever DVD blank media, but I'm waiting until they go on sale this weekend (Officemax 14.99) deal.

I looked over the Media codes link in the forums and noticed that the 16x Verbatim Datalifes were listed, but not the Verbatim 16x. I called Officemax to find out if the Verbatim 16x were DatalifePlus and the person told me that he foudn no such thing on the spindle. I've seen that the Datalifes are MCC004 which I hear are real good. What is the big difference between the Plain 16x Verbatim and the 16x verbatim DatalifePlus?

I'd like to give my appreciation for all of you guys helping us newbs answer all important questions.

Hello pzam and welcome to AD. Congrats on the new benq. Awesome drives!

Here's a site that can give you some idea of some good MID codes, and some you want to stay away from. It hasn't been updated for a while, but you can use it as a reference:

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Verbatim data life plus and the new data life are the same. There was a lot of confusion between data life and data life plus,so they eliminated the plus. There was quite a bit of difference in the 4x speed, but the 8x and 16x speed verbs are some of the best media out there. If you see labels that say Data Life plus, then they are older discs, but still very good. Verbatim Data Life 16x is about the only verbs I can find, except the 4x digital movie quality discs. Top notch stuff. The best verbs will ID as MCC. Some of the older stuff had some ricohs and cmags thrown in,mainly the 4x speed.

I don't see much info about the benq 1655 lightscribe, but should be a great drive. I got the HP640C lightscribe and it totally sucks. It came bundled with my pc,but I use it to read and scribe only.I let my benqs do all the backups because of their superb compatability on stand alone players.

That benq should love those verbatim 16x. You may want to try the plus format. That's all I use because those drives can booktype. You'll need the booktyping program. It's called quite 2.0
I'm not sure how it'll react to the 1655,but it should do the booktyping.. You can get it here, just click on drivers and download qsuite 2.0 . Ignore the icon of a man digging and says site is down.I just looked at it yesterday and it let me through to the drivers updates.

http://support.benq.com/front/BenqMain.asp?MenuHead=128&ShowType=...

If you encounter any stand alones/pc drives/or game consoles that give you a no disc error on those backups, then check on the booktyping feature.

They should also have the latest firmware update for that drive. Take note of that firmware version, you may need to update that drive later on.

Good Luck!

hi saugmon, thanks for the links both of them were real helpful!

I'm still not sure about what the MID is for Verbatim 16x. Videohelp.com doesn't appear to have specifically the Verbatim 16x media they however have 4x, 6x, 8x, datalifeplus, datalife, pearl white, digitalmovie, lightscribe, and with videogard protection.

I read some reviews that most of the Verbatim 16x's were MCC's. Back in December there was a sale of the same type of Verbatim 16x's that I'll be purchasing this sunday and most people were wondering the same thing, some people bought the discs and found that the MID was MCC. I just need assurance that these Verbatim 16x's won't be 2nd class or below media. Could someone help me with this?

Oh and saugmom, I'll be aiming for the +R's definitely. I might buy 2 50pk spindles -r and +r to try out both, but I do think +r will be much sufficient for me. Thanks again.

Those verbatim +16x will have an MID code of MCC-004 just like this one from dvdidentifier:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:MCC-004-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD-ROM]
Manufacturer Name : [Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [MCC]
Media Type ID : [004]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x , 6x-16x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I may be seeing you at office max come sunday morning,LOL. I'm still not sure if I'll pick up 500 OM verbs/500 Best Buy sony Yuden000-T02 if they have them/or see if Office Depot has a killer sale on the +8x speed media which are made by Ritek-R03.Those are also excellent and can be had for 20 cents each when during their buy 1/get 2 free sale. I will be stocking up sunday morning!

Definitely the plus format. Notice that link for dvdidentifier,it shows that backup as being booktyped to dvd-rom. This was off my HP640C lightscribe. I did not know this drive had that booktyping capability? But,this backup wouldn't play on my el cheapo magnavox player. My benq drive will play it. Chalk another up for the kick ass compatability test for the Benq Drives.

Even booktyped,2 of my non benq drives have a hell of a time playing their booktyped backups in my stand alones. That's my burner quality theory!

just an added scratch-resistent layer to prevent the dvds from getting damaged through heavy handling of/use...that's all
