i'm currently ripping all of my dvd's to my hard drives using dvd decrypter and auto gk. i do not want to copy discs to backup discs. the goal is to have all of my movies stored on my rather large file server, so any of the computers, including a htpc can have access to them without having to hunt through dvd cases.

dvd decrypter and auto gk work well enough, but it's cumbersome. i've been using them for about a year and a half, and am wondering if some better solution has came out since.

i like to keep the AC3 encoding on the audio because of the discrete channels and a hookup to a digital surround decoder hooked up to my htpc. i keep the total file size for a movie around 1 GB using Xvid for video. what's the best programs out now that may make this process easier? also, are there better audio and/or video codec's out that you smart folks would recommend?

I would rip with DVD Shrink once copy protection is removed and rip to DVD-9 and that way you will have almost a 1 for 1 copy of the movie the file will be about 8-9 gigs but when you convert to XviD yo will still get your 1gb movie it will take longer but it will work.

Or just use shrink to compress to DVD-5 you will loose some quality not much and that will cut your XviD time in half.

jumpman, thanks for hijacking my thread...

tdisom, thanks for the reply. does DVD Shrink do all the steps you outline? or, would i have to use another program to compress it into XviD afterwards? i'm also guessing DVD Shrink must be used after a separate decrypting program? my goal is to find a "one stop shopping" program that lets me put in a disc, and rip it to predefined settings.

right now i have to...

1) decrypt with DVD Decrypter, reselecting folders every time because it doesn't save the settings
2) select the files/folder to read from in auto gk, because it doesn't remember a default folder, select the file/folder to save to because it doesn't remember a default folder, then rip it.

an automatic naming convention setup would be nice too, especially on episodic tv shows (which all must be done seperately with dd and autogk.)

that doesn't sound like a lot, but it's a noticable pain in the ass when ripping thousands (yes, thousands) of movies/tv shows.

i'm also running into multiple problems with DVD Decrypter (the packet header not found thing) and not being able to rip some of those with auto gk. i guess it's new copy protection that's no longer going to be overcome because both programs have stopped being supported.

After ripping to file mode DVD-9 yes you would have to compress in an xvid program. And yes the Copy Protects are giving DVD Decryptor a run for its money but it is still usefull. Any dvd costs but it is worth it and it just runs in the back ground it take care of 99% of the Copy Protects out there and is updated quite often. Run that with shrink and you can eliminate DVD decryptor. with shrink you can choose your default rip to folder.

hmm... as far as ripping goes, can't you just use Alcohol 120%? please correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe it has the necessary tools built in.

thanks for the replies. i'm going to give anydvd/clonedvd a shot, coupled with autogk. i like it's interface better, as you can actually see which files you are ripping instead of guessing in DVD Decrypter.

i don't see what using DVD Shrink would get me...it'd force use of 3 programs instead of the current use of just 2.

i researched Alcohol 120%. it looks to do the same thing as anydvd/clonedvd. i'll give it a shot if the former doesn't work.

i guess there's just not a program that will do it all (to include encoding to XviD or other protocol as an *.avi).

i have Alcohol 120 and CloneDVD... Alcohol 120 may be slightly harder to use (slightly, its still easy), but it does a LOT more. However, as far as i know, it does not do DivX or AVI conversions.
