I keep seeing people say this over and over.

I've always burned at 16x and rarely ever have costers, is the half speed thing for people with slower computers??

I really dont see a difference except for how long it takes it to burn, no difference in quality at all.

Not!

Burn half the rated speed of the media is a general guidelines. Lots of stuff to consider like media quality and burner quality. Also throw in a good el cheapo $20-$30 stand alone player that will play just about anything you throw at it.

I've got another pc which has a 598 mhz celeron/xp-home/256 mbs rimm/dual hard drives/and a benq 1620. No problem burning my sony +8x Yuden000-T02 at 16x.This pc does have limited resources, but she burns like the wind. She is lean and mean!So burn speed is no factor to me,but burner quality/updated firmware is.

Crappy media, you may have to go to the lowest burn speed just to get a good playback from your stand alone/s. Same with a crappy burner.

With quality media and an up to date firmware version of a quality drive, then the burn speed may be increased.

It's all about all those little errors that may show up on your backups. I use the speed that keeps all those little errors to a minimum. Using such scans as nero speedtest/dvdinfopro/kprobe/plextools/etc,you can scan the different burn speeds from certain MID coded media and go with the speed that keeps your backups with the fewest errors.
I was quite surprised that my benq 1640 produced very few errors on my Verbatim +16x, MCC-004 at the 8x burn speed. 12x also fared very well. The 4x scan showed more PI/PO errors and the 2.4x backups give my the majority of my issues. The few 2.4x backups gave me crc errors when I tried to re-rip them. I had to back them up again, but at the 8x speed. They are still playable in my stand alones, but do me no good if I can't re-rip them later.

Keep errors down to a minimum, and make sure your stand alones can play them perfectly. Those standalone players will tell you if you are burning too fast/poor quality media/and even crappy burners by watching your playbacks on them. Pixellation/freezing/jumping/and no disc errors if they don't like something about your backups. Try the free version, with adverts of this program to scan your backups and see how yours fare:

http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

My burners:
2 benq 1620s, I burn at 4x on my Yuden000-T02 and 8x on my MCC-004
1 benq 1640: 8x on both those MID coded media
1 HP 640c lightscribe: Total pc of crap, but reads and scribes ok.
1 Khypermedia +8x: Not too bad burner, just a few stand alones won't recognize her backups, despite using taiyo yuden media
1 I/O Magic 16x EMPA drive: Another total pc of crap, still a good reader.

I've got 3 benqs a burning and playing just about anywhere I want to because of booktyping my backups. That HP also booktyes, and so does the I/O Magic, but I have a heck of a time getting stand alones and my other pc drives to recognize their backups. That's my Burner quality theory!

Good burner + good quality media= Faster burn speeds!

Edit: BTW, your sony DRU-720A is a rebadged Lite-on 1673s. Very good drive. If you encounter any of your stand alone players that give you a no disc inserted error on both plus and dash format, you have the capability to booktype them to dvd-rom. Just something to take note of in case that issue ever arrises.

hi,

i liek you through explaination, but i never trust max speed, it puts to much physical demand on the discs, espeically when they are crappy.

BTW: i am stuck with burning at 1x which is total pain in the ass.

peace,

1x whats the problem man, sounds like it time for a new drive

TC2 good rule of thumb is burn your 4x media at 4x the 8x media at 4x or 8x if you have a good machine(which i do)and the 16x media at 8x i never burn faster than 8x its just not worth the chance

I always burn at 2 - 2.5 speed. It's worth the wait. I have never had a bad disk burning at that speed.

may i ask what drive you are currently using? reason being, if you have a quality drive, there is really NO reason to burn that slow on quality media (i assume you are using TYs or Verbatims)...i seriously get my BEST scans on TY media burning them @ 8x (on the 8x rated TYG02 DVD-R format and the YUDEN000T02 DVD+R respectively) :P

but, if it's working for you, i am not the one to convince you to change your ways, keep using what works well for you...i'm just suggesting that if you have a quality drive, burning slower than 4x is not necessary on quality media, i among others have scans to prove this fact... :)

Saugmon are your results burning the varbatim 16x +R'S at 4x on the BenQ 1640 still in the good quality range? The reason I ask is I use that same brand of disc and burner and always at 4x booktyped to ROM. Thanks....

hey, nothing wrong with it if YOU find the results acceptable to you, i can't argue with that...i have 2 liteon drives actually, the SOHW-1633S and the SOHW-1693S, i personally burn @ 8x with great results, but that's just me~ :) keep up the good work, use what works best FOR YOU...

while i'm not saugmon, i have also had experience with the same media on the same drive...MY opinion of it, NO, the 4x burn speed on MCC004s do NOT compare with @8x or even @12x ON THE BENQ dw-1640. i'm sure saugmon has burned MORE MCC004s than i have, but i do have a few hundred under my belt...my PERSONAL suggestion would be to keep the burns @8x on the Verb 16x DVD+R MCC004s, even @12x if you feel a lil "wild" one day~ :) burning SLOW on the Benq dw-1640 on quality media will give you POOR results (ie. @2x or @4x), i haven't tried @6x so i dunno about that, but i found my "sweet spot" @8x for all my TYs and Verbs on that Benq 1640~ :) juss my 2 cents~

I am currently using a Khypermedia 8x internal burner with Dvd Xcopy Xpress. The media I used when I first got my burner was Khypermedia 1-4x disk. They were flawless. Now I am using Khypermedia 8X with numerous flaws. After reading several post I ran to Best Buy and bought a 50 pk Sony (MIJ) DVD+R 1x-8x disk for $14.99. Anyway, my question is if I can choose the speed my burner burns at. If so how? Can anyone tell me where I can find some 1-2.4x or 4x disk?

Thanks Doc,while I very seldom do any scans on my burns(none since swaping to Benq's)ive never had any problems on playback of my 4x backups.Im just reluctant to change what works but if im cheating my self out of better quality im willing to give it a go at 8x.Could these 4x backups of mine give me problems latter on down the road. How
bad where your 4x burns?

Thanks again.

it's not so much that they were horrible burns @4x, but at 8x and 12x respectively my burns using the Benq 1640 produced MUCH higher scores in Nero cd-dvd/speed scans...i personally just found that burning faster with the Benq gave me "better" quality scores, the 4x scores were decent (low 90s), however, not what i am accustomed to on a regular basis (quality score of 96+ when i burn @8x)...

i don't think you have to worry too much about your 4x burns "going bad on you", they ARE on good quality Verbatim MCC004s, so, need not worry...we all need to find our OWN "best speed" and "best results"...these results MAY vary from setup to setup, but, generally speaking...my results @8x or faster on MCC004 is accurate and in the same ballpark as saugmon's as well as another member catfreak, who's experience i value highly...

Hello everyone,

This question goes to those who burn at 8x and above.

I know your suppose to stop all background tasks, to dedicate your PC, memory, HD to burning.

Reason I ask is: I never burn above 4x because I don't want to stop all those just to burn a DVD.

4x is pretty much I can do steady since the PC get's busy and can't push 4x constently. The burner will stop a few times.

So to get 8x, 12x constant, on a CLEAN pc, is possible ?

I usually average out around x3.55 cause it does x4.01 for a while but goes down a little when the hard drive goes crazy for a few seconds :)

And yes, I burn nothing else than Taiyo Yuden !

Wow this is very interesting I have burn a little over 150 DVDs @ 12X TYs the 8x media (forever!) and NEVER a coaster. All this with my Pioneer 109 with the firmware upgrade to A109 (ripping at 12X+) and if this wasn't enough I surf the web, check my email download stuff ALL of that in the background.
Maybe I'm just very lucky but I've never had a problem palying back any of my DVDs in my stand alone player (not a cheap on though). I guess tonight I'll make a quality test with Nero and see if I'm missing out on something.

BTW my system is:
P4 HT @ 3.7Ghz (overclocked 3.2Ghz) 1G DDR RAM, AIW Radeon 9800Pro, Audigy Platinum Pro, 2 160GB HDD SATA, Pioneer DL-DVD Burner (ripps @ 12-14x all the time WOW!)
So yeah it's not a cheap system but is not the latest either.

BSD ,why do think they rate the media at 8x? Taiyo Yuden may know something that you dont lol. you could always get the 16x media if you want to burn at 12x but 8x is plenty fast enough for me

aabbccdd,
Can you e-mail me your Signature Picture? I would prefer to get my hands on 1024X768 so I can use it as my Desktop Background!

I have used some GQ Brand DVD+R's and I burned them at 8x on my BenQ 1640 ... once in a while I have a disc that has a "SKIP" on it? Now I havve never tried burning my TYG-02 (8X DVD-R) at more than 4X ... since these are my serious and more important back-ups?

Q1: has anyone w/ 1640 firm BSOB burned a TYG02 at faster than 4X? And have you experienced any glithces in playback?

THANKS!

Most in the BenQ forum are using BSLB like me, I use TYs and burn at 8x with good results.

I just got a shipment of shiny inkjet printable Ty-g02's. I've got the over burn protection set up for qsuite 2.0 and 8x is my max speed to burn at. I haven't burn any on this benq 1640,it is a virgin when it comes to the dash format, LOL

Those babies will go 16x on my benq 1620. I haven't burned that many to do any scans with them. I'd like to hear some other members posts as well with the ty-g02. Kivory666 and catfreak also have benq 1640s.

When you have the 1640,most of us have it set up to booktype the plus format to dvd-rom,making our backups a lot more compatable on stand alone players.

I'll have to burn a couple of those ty-g02's on my 1640 and scan them and post back. My fw is BSMB

Edit: Here's a couple scans:

The first Ty-G02 burned on my benq 1640 at 8x:

Look at the 2nd burned at 4x:

Solid burn probably hasn't kicked in yet,but the 8x speed should look better after a few more burns. That 8x still looked ugly!

Hi folks,

The reason I started using DVD-Rs was because they are more compatible in stand-alone players. This is before I learned about my BenQ and Booktype Setting the DVD+Rs.

Q1: Would you folks say what is the BEST ... usning DVD+R and Booksetting it or just using DVD-R?

Q2: If my DVD back-up has been shrunk at anything below 80% ... would you folks still recommend burning at 8X speed for a TYG02?

Thanks!

Your scan speed needs to be 8X with BenQ units. Ive had my 1640 for some time. While most BenQ owners use Nero Speed for scaning and again 8X as a std. read speed for all media, does not matter what speed you burn at.

Q1)
For both my 1620s and 1640, Booktyping the plus quality format media to dvd-rom is the way to go. Way superior than the dash format. For myself,I get 95%+ stand alone compatability with my booktyped backups. Now on my 1620s,more like 60-75% stand alone compatability. Way too low for my standards

Q2)Below 80%?

Are you going by the compression setting on DVD Shrink?

If DVD Shrink tells you 60,then that's a %40 compression, which is absolutely no trouble for me. Just takes a little longer, and I use the Adaptive error compensation enhancement of Max Smoothness. Harry Potter-goblet of fire was in the compression range for main movie only. Perfect backup on my 32 in TV. I've never scanned one of my high compression backups like the harry potter and lord of rings series.
