I'd like to hear some other members posts as well with the ty-g02. Kivory666 and catfreak also have benq 1640s.
for quite awhile now, i don't use my Benq 1640 for DVD-R format, from MY OWN personal experience, i get better burns using my Pioneer dvr-109 and Sony dru-710a (liteon 1633s) for my TY dvd-r~ :)

that's just me, i'm not much of a DVD-R format person to begin with, but since i have other drives available to me when i DO burn to DVD-R, i get consistently better results using a non-benq burner for that particular format...just my 2 cents~

@gonwk

q1: there really is no "best" way...the ones in the bitsetting camp (myself included) would suggest DVD+R booktyped to dvd-rom as i feel the DVD+R media is a superior format (just MY own personal opinion); but it should go without saying that if you have no issues using DVD-R and it's fully compatible with all the standalones that you currently use, by all means, stick with it.~ :)

q2: for ME and ME alone, i don't care how much compression i use for my backups, if it drops really low, i just use a DVD+R DL Verbatim disc, yes, i know that is NOT an option for everyone, but i ALWaYS 100% of the time burn my TYG02 @8x, never an exception for me...but, as i mentioned in this thread and other threads, i dont' use my Benq 1640 for DVD-R format burns, i utilize my other drives which i PERSONALLY feel do a "better" job with DVD-R format~
