How do I convert video .MKV to AVI or MPEG2 - ?

I happened upon a video with a .MKV extension; the video will only play with VLC Media Player (it shows the file's codec as "Stream 0=H264" Stream 1=mpga")

I'm not a programmer, so I'm looking for reasonably simple solutions to converting this to avi or high quality mpeg.

I was actually trying to do this a while ago, I gave up after a while...but here's a site that might help, if not just google it,or something...
