How do I burn standard format (DVD-Video)?

I hope I'm in the right place for this. I back up all my DVDs on DVD+R discs using DVD Decryptor & DVD Shrink. Problem is, these discs will only play on machine that will read this DVD+R format. So, I need to find out how to burn a DVD in the standard format that all DVDs are when you rent them (ie: will play on older DVD machines). This is the little logo that says DVD video with the picture of the disc in between the two words. Is there software available that I use to burn in this format and also what type of DVD disc should I be using to do this (+R -R, etc...).
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You can burn to -r which is more compatible esp. w/ older players than +r. Or if your burner supports booktyping you can booktype +r/rw dvd's -this will make the disc appear to be a dvd-rom which is the most compatible (and what I think you are asking about).
DVD Decrypter and Nero both support booktyping if your drive does.

Well I tried your recomendation to a +R DVD but it's still not working. Using Nero in the "express" mode, I added the video files in the TS Video folder then I have 3 options of book type.
1. Unmodified
2. Physical disc type
3. DVD-Rom.
I burned 3 DVD's, one with each of these settings and it still won't play a standard DVD machine. I haven't tried these on a -R disc with each of these settings, yet.
Can you tell me if there is some other setting(s) in Nero I am missing. There's nothing about book typing in the help menu on Nero.
Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First we need to make sure your drive can booktype - what's the make and model? Next compatibilty can depend on a few things like media, burn speed etc. So if your drive does support booktyping and you have compatibility issues booktyping them is best w/ quality +r media - like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.

The model I'm using is a Sony DVD/CD burner Model: DRX-710UL. The Nero software came with it. These are more specs on the Sony.
-Media and Modes Supported: DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/DVD+R, DL/+RW: DVD-ROM, DVD-Video CD:CD-DA, CD-ROM (XA), CD Extra, Video CD, Photo CD, CD Text, multi-session
- Data Transfer Rate: 16.2 Mbps maximum (12X DVD-ROM)
- Average Access Time: 135 milliseconds (DVD 16X), 140 milliseconds
(CD 48X)
-System Requirements: Pentium III 800 MHz or faster (or
equivalent) CPU minimum, Pentium IV 1.6 GHz or faster (or
equivalent) CPU is recommended for real time video authoring/editing,

I don't know if speed is an issue. I'm running this with a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop. It can only run at the 1.0 USB speed. It has 384 MB RAM and runs a Pentium III @ 1.13GHz. That should be more than the required 800 MHz Pent III noted above, yes?
I'll check the link you gave me and let you know of any progress.
Please let me know if you are able to surmise any compatibility issues based on the specs I gave.

The only problem I see your having is using a 1.0 usb - slower than 2.0 - so will be slower.
You may need to download the booktype utility since your drives oem is Liteon. I'll check on that and let you know.
The other thing - make sure your drive has the latest firmware: BYX5
You should also use quality discs like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim and not burn at max. On yours I would burn at 8x with quality stuff.
editted to add: Checked w/ the inhouse expert - docTY for your booktyping - here you go:
Open up "Nero Express"
on Nero Express 6, click "Copy Entire Disc" or (on the top drop down arrow, click on "DVD," Copy DVD on "Copy and Back Up image.)
Now you should see an "Options" on the right, next to the "Source Drive & Destination Drive", click on "Options"
Under "Book Type Settings" you should be able to change to "DVD-ROM" or "Automatic" and click "OK" to change or accept. That's it you're done. Sometimes I just leave it on "Automatic" which Nero automatically change the book type to DVD-ROM when it starts to burn or back up. But if you like yours set to DVD-ROM, then just click on DVD-ROM under "Book Type Settings"

Your drive should booktype thru Nero or with the other progs you'll need to use the Liteon Booktype utility. Easy to use - I use it for mine!

Thanks for all the info. I'll give it a try. One thing from all the reading I've been doing on the subject is the topic of bitsets and how most all dvd burners run on specific bitset settings originally created by Ricoh, Plextor, NEC, Lite-on, Nu Tech, etc. There was mentioned more that once that Sony had not revealed the bitset they used in their burners thus many Sony burners weren't able to convert +R to DVD-rom. How did you find out my Sony uses the Lite-on bitset?

Sony didn't actually make your drive - LiteOn did - so you should be good to go on the booktyping either w/ Nero or the LiteOn Utility.
Sony doesn't always make their own products - for drives the also use LiteOn and BenQ. Here's where I checked your drive to find the OEM:

I would recommend a Liteon or Plextor (one I would like to have) though the Plextor may be more than $100. I have a LiteOn that's like a timex - takes a licking and keeps on burning! If your in the US get out newegg.com or look at places like Best Buy, Staples or Office Depot for sales.

How do you tell if the burner supports book typing?
And also I forgot to mention I was looking for one that would be able to burn DL discs...

It will usually say in the specs. Most burners now are dual layer - all of mine are so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm pretty sure all LiteOn and Plextor are. But to double check use this site to search for the features you want - here's a link:

im new but have problem not seen in post using Nero 6 smart start trying to burn mpg to dvd figured out i needed a dvd authoring program so i pirated a dvdsanta demo without watermark but video when played in home dvd player has no sound. in the advanced settings there is a checked box that says compress LPCM audio when highlighted the info window says compress LPCM audio into MPEG audio format and leave more disk space to the video. is this my problem the box currently cheked what happens if i unchek it and burn dvd will it have sound

Please refer to your response dated March 2, 2006. This is the follow up for that post.
I'm at a loss here. I downloaded and installed the Book Type 135 from Lite-on. I was using Nero 6.3 and followed the instructions you referred me to with regards to changing the book type to DVD-Rom. When I clicked on the "copy entire disk", then "options" button, the fields described on the web page you gave me were not present. Only a write speed and a few check boxes. Nothing about changing the booktype setting. Same situation when I would go straight into Nero's DVD-Video files section. I would add the video files then in the next window click on options but nowhere was I able to find a menu to change the book type.
So I tried using the Book Type135 program I downloaded. This tells me what the current setting is (+R) and I can allegedely change it to DVD-rom. So I specified DVD-rom and clicked on the "change" button and it acknowledged the change was made. I left the program open showing I had made the change to DVD-rom then tried burning the DVD with Nero. No go. After the burning was finished, I would query the DVD again with DVD Identifier and the "current settings" still read +R, not DVD-rom.
So, I went to Nero and upgraded to verion 6.6. This verion has the options button in both the "copy the entire disk" and "DVD-Video files" section which takes me to a where I can actually specify DVD-rom. I tried burning with this version of Nero and not using the Book Type135 program to change the setting prior. After I burned the DVD, I couldn't use the Book Type135 program because the current disc booktype was grayed out because the disc was not empty. So, I used another program called DVD Identifier. This showed the disc and book type as +R & DVD-rom respectively. So, excited, I thought I had this licked but when I went to play it on an older DVD player that only reads the DVD-rom DVDs, I got the same result... nothing.
The DVD player I'm testing these on plays all the DVD I can rent but I can't get it to read the DVD's I'm burning. I also tried it on Maxell and Verbatim and changed the speed to 8x.
So, that's where I sit at the moment. Any suggestions on what I still might be doing wrong?

Looks like your doing everything right. The booktype utility should show you what format it sees the disc as even though it's not empty.
Your player sounds quite picky!!
Next step would be to reduce the burn speed to 4x and let's see how the player likes that. If that doesn't do the trick or even now you can post your last Nero log that you were booktyping. The Nero logs can be found here for 6: program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory.txt. Just be sure to edit out your serial # - they usually begin w/ 1A or 1C.

Success!! The speed seemed to do the trick. I dropped the write speed down to 4x and tried a couple of different DVD-rom burns and all worked at this speed. Would the fact that my laptop runs at 1.1USB speed affect the burning/converting to DVD-rom? All the DVD's I've burned before at the higher speed on the +R setting play just fine on my player which is capable of reading +R discs. Does the computer have to do more processing to convert to DVD-rom on a +R disc than burning without having to do whatever the conversion is thus requiring a slower speed in order to burn the data properly? If the data being burned to a DVD can't keep up with the speed of the burner, would this be considered a buffer underrun issue?

Glad to hear the good news!! Players are picky so what one may like in terms of media & burns another may not. It's finding what works that's a pain at x's. So to reduce the issues it's best to start w/ quality media like the Verbatim & Maxells (made in japan) you are using and playing with the burn speed. My method is 1/2 of what the drive supports as long as the media is rated at that speed - reason I recommended 8x - since that didn't help took it down a notch.
As for more processing needed when booktyping - not really - it's just a field change on the disc.
Now buffer underruns there I can't really be of much help but that's the gist of it - transfer rates. So w/ a slower usb hub - that may cause a problem. Most drives come with some sort of protection for this - like my Liteon has Smartburn. For your drive check out this link - there's a usb firmware update that you may want to look into:

Oh and these also they last firmware for your drive here too - so if not update it's best to keep this up to date too. Helps with the read/write strategies of media esp. the newer media.

Well, here I am again feeling like I'm back to square one. I have a Sony DRX-710UL DVD burner. Everything was running fine (thanks to your help a while back), being able to burn using the CD-ROM setting on Nero Express at the 4x speed. Then I had a virus and had to re-install windows xp and ever since then, I haven't been able to burn files that
I know they are good, burnable files. I have been using a wedding video files that I had made who know how many copies to date so I know these are good files. I've tried doing a standard backitup on Nero to a +R DVD as a data disk. It says the burning was complete but it stalls when I try to verify.
I tried using the DVD Identifier program on the blank disc to verify it's working and it shows it as a blank +R disc. After I attempt to burn the DVD and it finishes, I try the DVD Identifier program again and I get: "ERROR : Unable to Initialize disc in Time : Not Ready - Logical unit not ready [02/04/01]".
I can burn these files on a -R disc without the DVD-ROM setting and it works. Actually, -R is not compatible with DVD-Rom so I'm told but the fact remains I can play the -R burned disc on my DVD player (it plays many formats). However, when I try the +R discs on the DVD-Rom setting (nero 6.6), it won't play in the DVD player or on the computer. I've even tried burning the +R disc putting it on the automatic setting and the same thing. I tried making a disc to disc copy with no luck.
I have a stack of about 10 dvd's I've gone through trying to trace down what I think the problem is NOT and what I'm left with is basically, software. There has to be a setting somewhere I'm unaware of. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Nero 6.3 and the 6.6 update about 4 times. Could it be a Windows XP driver setting?
When this was working, I was using Nero Express. I would add the video files in the TS-Video folder and go to the Final Burn Settings page. There I would click on options making sure the Book Type setting is on DVD-ROM. I would uncheck the "Automatically adapt write speed to disc" since I am setting the write speed at 4x (that was the only speed I could get it to work on before). I'm unsure as to whether I need the "DVD high compatibility mode" checked or the "Write extended lead-out on double-layer dics" checked. I think I left the DVD high comp. checked and the Write extended unchecked before when this was working.
Then I would click OK, change the write speed to 4x and burn. No problem before but now, I can't get it to play.
I thought it might be a hardware problem. But, it reads rental DVD's and other I previously burned fine. Is there a separate read and write head in these burners so it can play but just not record?
I thought about buying another model burner just to see if it is a hardware problem but all my elmination processes point to software but I'm pretty much out of ideas at this point.
Can you help? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So the problem is with the +r not playing - the -r's play fine. Both formats are burning fine - right?
I won't use the data dvd option - that can be hit or miss on playback.
For video use the dvd-video option like you have been.
Post a Nero log from a +R burn.
Look here for the log: Program files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt.
Just be sure to remove your serial # usually begin w/ 1A, 1C or 5C.
The logs are separated by something like this:
