Cant network Laptop to Desktop

I am trying to network a laptop to a desktop - both running XP.

The laptop shows a network connection - and I can ping to laptop from the desktop - but I can't see any shared folders when I go into network connections (yes there are some shared folders on both machines).

If I double-click the network connection icon in the system tray...It says the amount of time it has been connected therefore it does seem that it is actually connected??

Please Help. Thanks.

Control Panel to Network Setup Wizard.

Make sure you call the network area the same name on both computers and you should be able to connect easily.

Once this is done, open 'my computer' and then click on 'my network places' on the left hand menu column.

make sure they both have the same workgroup name and both have different computer names.

(only do this next bit if your not alrewady sharing an internet connection between the 2 comps)

when youve done that open up network connections, right click on your lan adapter and click on "Internet Protocol (TCP IP)" and click properties. check "use the following ip address"

in "IP address" type 192.168.0.1
in "subnet mask" type 255.255.255.0
leave the bottom box blank

niw go to your other comp and do the same but set the IP to be 192.168.0.2

you should now be able to see the shared files
