What are the best programs to rip and copy a dvd i have one at home i want to do for someone but it says its copy protected

Try the free programs DVDFab Decrypter, DVDShrink and DVD Decrypter. Rip to your HDD with DVDFab, compress with Shrink and burn with Decrypter if you do not have Nero. Guides and sw here

Use decent media, Sony, Verbatim, Fuji or Maxell and burn at 4x.

The ipod video uses an mpeg4 or h264 compression and standard DVD's use
Mpeg2. So there is much more involved than simply transferring the video to
the ipod - you would have to convert the video first. Once converted to the
proper format - you should be able to transfer it with itunes. There are a
number of compression utilities out there, one of them is the Main Concept
h254 encoder. Another is videora
