Why is it so difficult to find DVD-RW? I can easily find tons of DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW... but looks like DVD-RW are close to totally disappear!
Is this true only here in Italy, only here in Rome, or is just this standard going obsolete?!?

Probably the biggest reason is that it seems most standalone dvd recorders use the + format rather than the - format. I would guess most RW media is used in the standalones as compared to burners embedded in computer systems. IMO the + format is overtaking - format because + format is capable of being booktyped as DVD ROM, while - format lacks this capability. I know I haven't purchased any - format for well over a year and a half.

Media questions are usually addressed in the media forum.

I see little difference in + or -RW. Perhaps some standalone systems won't use the - format, but the PCs still do. As for booktyping, that's a somewhat overrated function. Usually a niche market for those with players having compatibility issues. It's a use it if you have it deal, not all burners booktype. As for availability, I've seen no problem in finding -RW in the North American market.

Please be patient with a DVD-newbie...
What does "booktype" mean?

The ability to write files to recordable media so that the recorded disk is read as a DVD ROM instead of +R, +RW, or +R DL according to what is being used. Only + cam be booktyped. DVD ROM is what the factory discs are and is the universal format for players. Theoretically, if the disc is booktyped DVD ROM, it should play on all players. Most players play DVD ROM and +/-R. Not all burners can booktype. I've never had an issue with it. Some people with old players and a few new ones that play only ROM or with limited format support find booktyping useful. It's a niche market.
