I a newbie and just bought a new computer. I've only actually burned about 50 DVDs so far and was wondering what I should do to get the most out of my burner? How often I should clean the lens? And overall make it last as long as I can. Thanks.

I've got 3 pcs all with DVD-RW drives and I will not use one of those hard laser lens cleaning discs. Those lens cleaning discs are a last resort-before drive replacement.

Well over 3000+ burns on my original benq 1620 and I maybe sprayed some compressed air in it once. She's still holding as strong as day 1.

Make sure all the discs you insert in it are clean.Try to keep the tower nice and dust free.Lots of cooling air circulating.

The best thing to do for that burner to make it last longer is install a dvd-rom or another DVD-RW drive to do the ripping. Then you can use that burner for burning purposes only. Ripping will take the heaviest burden on a drive.Dual drives also makes it easier for dvd/cd backups.

The most important thing for DVD-RW drives is quality media. Some media out there is very crappy. Stand alone players can give you bad playback. It can also lead to burn errors which could lead to throwing your dmas into pio mode.

What's the brand name and model # of that burner?

HP a1118x-b/athlon 64-3300+/BenQ 1650 BCDC/LG 8163B/Modded Wii/Epson-R300 and Ty Watershields!!!

I bought an HP Pavilion Media Center a1330n Desktop PC, so what ever CD burner comes with it is the one I have. I am using Sony R+ adn Sony R- blank discs. And I have dual drives. I've been burning about 10 dvd per day and am wondering if this is too much too soon? I'm trying to burn my vast collection of DVDs so I will be at it a while. Should I cut back on how many I do per day? Thanks for the info.

What's the actual model # of that burner drive?

Is it an HP lightscribe? They use quite a few different model#s.

Use this free program that'll tell us the actual model#.It'll also tell you the firmware version and the MID code of your blank dvd media:

I have an HP 640c lightscribe. Because of the backups that come off this drive,I only use it for scribing and reading. If I burned 20 copies off of that drive in 1 day, then I'd have 20 copies that would play in only half my drives.

10 backups a day is hardy any use at all.I've done 20+ copies a day in both my spare pc with the older benq 1620 and main pc that's in my specs. That's some serious time if I had to rip 20 originals a day.

I do give them a vigourous workout and those 3 benqs just keep burning, but no ripping with them! That's where burner life will quickly be shortened. Heck, you can get a quality burner from newegg.com for around $40 or a dvd-rom drive for $20.00

Well, I don't have the internet on the computer I'm using and I put the software you mention onto my computer, but it didn't work right I think because of not having internet. But I did look around and I think I found what kind of brand: HP DVD writer 740b with lightscribe. I also found something else called Asus DVD -E616A. I use the DVD rom drive to copy the DVD (Ripping?) and the other drive to actually burn. Is this what you are suggesting is best?

Saugmon, does the program you listed work if I don't have the internet on the computer I'm using it on?
