Hi All,

I was looking through some of the other posts on how to deal with DVD Skrink CRC errors when backing up a disk and I need some more info.

I'm trying to backup a DVD that is part of a 7-disk set (instructional course content disks). All the other disks backed up fine. But on this one disk, I have problems. The disk plays fine on my home DVD and even my home computer, but when I try to back it up in DVD shrink, I get CRC error at about 11%.

So I loaded up DVD decrypter with the settings suggested in other forum postings (ignore read errors, etc). When I start the backup (ISO read mode), it again, detects read errors - one after the other for over 90 minutes (with # read error retries = 0). I end up giving up since the retries can't be good for my drive...? It appears that there are continuous read errors from a certain point on the disk on.

I did then attempt a File Read mode and the problem is localized to one VOB file. The rest copied over fine. I try to then fake it out by copying a good VOB file to the file that couldn't be copied but that didn't fly.

So. Can anyone tell me why this one disk can't be backed up? There did not appear to be any copy protection detected by Shrink or Decrypter.

I don't like to take original disks with me when I travel since if I lose then, they're long gone...:P

Thanks in Advance!
Corey.

A CRC error is typically caused by a dirty, smudged, or scratched disk, you may also have a bad press. The other possibility is copy protection that shrink or DVD decrypter can't handle. So try to clean it if it appears to be dirty or smudged in areas.

If it's a bad press or badly scratched, you'll need to get another disk and try it.

If it's copy protection, DVDShrink alone wont be able to backup your movie if protected by Sony or Microvision encryption, so this is what you do:

Rip the movie files to the HDD using the latest version of DVDFab Decrypter, once done open the files with DVDShrink (use the open files option and browse to the VIDEO_TS folder, highlight it and click ok), at this point use shrink as you normally would.

Get dvdfab Decrypter here:
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

If shrink gives you a problem when trying to open the files created by DVDFab, you'll need to process the files thru VobBlanker first then open the files created by VobBlanker with shrink as described.

Get VobBlanker here:

Note:DVDFab decrypter can be used to also successfully backup scratched DVDs that are too problematic for shrink or dvd decrypter.
