I am a newbie and people have problems with the DMA, what is the DMA???

So, is the preference to use DMA or avoid using it? I once got a message from DVDFab or VobBlanker which told me I'm not using it and if I want to use it I needed to reboot my computer. Not sure if anything happened as my drive still varies greatly in speed from one DVD to another 1.6x up to 14x speed.

Could the DMA have an effect on all my drives, of why my backup dvd's arent working on them or no?
