I have a DVD put out by Virgin Records. It's a bunch of TV shows which were broadcast on Canadian TV. It's a 3 DVD set. The first DVD needed Anydvd to complete. Disc 2 burned without problems without AnyDVD. Disc 3 is giving me huge problems. DVD Shrink can't read the disc, the error it gives is "Invalid DVD Navigation". When I try to rip the dvd with DVD Decrypter it gives me the error "Invalid IFO/BUP file". Finally I have tried PGCEdit, but that doesn't work either.

Any ideas on what to try? This is the first DVD I haven't been able to backup.

I have a Dual Layer burner, and the total DVD size I want to backup is 7.2GB, so it would fit on a Dual layer DVD. What is the best method for DVD9 backups? (I have nero7 Ultra)

Thanks in advance,
Mickey

With AnyDVD turned off, try ripping with DVDFab Decrypter. No guarantee, but it's worth a try. http://www.dvdidle.com/

I downloaded DVDFab during this epic process. It doesn't want to run on my system for some reason. When I try and run it says Error 1000, and stops running. I shut down AnyDVD first, but it was running during the install. Could that be causing the error in Fabdvd?

By the way I'm attempting this on a 2.5GHZ P4 system with 1GB of Ram, running a newly installed version of Windows XP pro.

Thanks for the advice,
Mickey

I used to do a lot of encoding with a 2.8GHz P4 with 2x512MB RAM. Your system should be more than adequate if you have enough HD free space and not too much RAM taken up by apps running in the background.

I have no idea why you're getting the error with DVDFab. One thing to remember though is not to have any programs running when installing apps. Most say to close all other apps when doing an install. Try deleting the DVDFab Decrypter and reinstalling it.

Thanks for the reply.

Reinstalling FabDVD with Anydvd not running didn't help. Now I get a different error (Get DVD information fail. 4096)

Anyone else want to chime in?

Stupid question but since it's under 8GB could I just copy it to my hard drive using Windows Explorer, then burn the whole thing to a dual layer DVD?

Doubtful. Encryption allows playing but not recording; doesn't matter if it's DVD5 or DVD9.

BroBear,

Thanks so much for your help. This DVD is driving me insane. It's now a matter of Pride. I've been trying to gleam what I can from the guide "Newbie guide to ARccOS Protection with DVD Decrypter". My thinking was what I'm dealing with is similar in that it's a DVD Structure issue. However I'm not working with a movie so I think my case is a little more complex. The DVD I want to backup contains two TV show and a few bonus features.

Following the directions in the guide I rip the "Main Movie" with DVD Decrypter. It completes without a problem.

Next I'm to switch to file mode, and rip all but the "bad files". In my case I tried ripping all the files, but three files failed due to errors. The 3 files being VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_02_0.IFO, and VTS_02_0.BUP. Therefore I think these are my problem files is that a safe assumption?

Skipping those three files I then ripped the remaining files from the DVD. Once done ripping I then open IFOEdit and strip stream the file VTS_01_0.IFO. It runs threw all the IFO files creating new pointer. Once that is complete I believe I should be done. However DVD Shrink says it can't find vts_01_0.VOB. What am I doing wrong now.

Do I need to remove something from the IFO Structure manually?

Thanks again for all your help?

Usually the process you mention calls for processing the files through FixVTS or VobBlanker to correct file compliance issues. I'd suggest using FixVTS; at least the interface on it seems more simple to me. Your choice, both are good apps. Give that a try before we go reviewing all the things that could have gone wrong.

I ran my ripped DVD through FixVTS. I tried it both by clicking cleanup and by clicking full disk. Now when I try DVD Shrink I get the error can not find file VTS_02_0.ifo. Since it's now a different file does that mean I'm one step closer?

AnyDVD released a new version recently. Using the latest version, with AnyDVD turned on, rip the DVD to the HD with DVD Decrypter. The "Check For Structure Protection" under "General" in "Settings" should be unchecked. SPTI or ElbyCDIO should be selected under I/O (I leave mine to SPTI). With the ripped files on the HD, run the ripped files through FixVTS. With the boxes unchecked, drag the VIDEO_TS.VOB file onto the FixVTS window and select Full DVD (remember boxes unchecked). The last is a bit redundant, since AnyDVD now incorporates FixVTS. But just making sure here. Once completed, cut and paste the FixVTS Backup out of the VIDEO_TS folder. Then open the new VIDEO_TS folder in Shrink. Does it work or what is the error message?

Doing as you instructed I got an error in DVD Decrypter I got a "BUP File patching failed" error on both VTS_02_0.ifo & VTS02_0.bup. Then when I ran it through FixVTS it gave me a Mapping Failed error, and FixVTS commented some sort of windows error and was forced to shut down.

So I tried turning all the errors check possible in DVD Decrypter, and it finished every file without a single error. I was very hopeful at this point. So I tried running the files through FixVTS. FixVTS again gave me a Mapping failed error, and was shut down.

Any more ideas or should I just quit?

Thanks so much. Your continued help has been great.

Upgrade to the latest AnyDVD-5.9.4.1. Try this with only Anydvd running in the back ground open Nero ultra 7. Find the option to COPY DVD. Since you want to copy with a DL Disc, Nero should be able to just copy the disc. I wouldn't do it on the fly, let it copy to the HDD and then burn.

edit- my bad you already have 5.9.4.1

The only thing I noticed was that AnyDVD corrected a structure flaw. I'm starting to wonder if the disc may not be flawed. Is there anyway you can check another copy of the DVD?

I've never gotten errors in the way you have with DVD Decrypter. What mode do you have it set to when you're doing the rip?

Bro bear I'm starting to wonder if this is not just a scratched or dirty disk/lens but you are the expert on reading AnyDVD!

Mickey try setting ignore read errors in dvdd just for this rip remember to uncheck it when done
if you can get it to your hd open up pgcedit and allow it to fix any errors that may pop-up!

then in processing if you get errors try and determine which files are giving you the errors! the editing out of those errors may be done with vobblanker or similar, and may work as you stated there are a lot of extra's you may not lose any real content!

why would you have tried to rip all the files when you have already cleaned the files that are problematic??

try this again for me and when you decrypt in file mode after using ifo modewhen it ask's if you would like to overwrite those files that alread y exist click no to all
if you get problematic files during this encode you can return to ifo mode to remove those bad cells also!

So far, I've been pointing out what isn't the problem and things that probably have no effect. I'll give some active input to see if we can't get the problem resolved.

I was wondering if DVD Decrypter had been left in IFO mode. I was wanting to see a full rip of the DVD using File mode in DVD Decrypter with the latest version of AnyDVD running in the background. That is with default settings except for unchecking "Check For Structure Protection" and leaving the I/O setting as SPTI. Here is a redundant step, but I'd like to see it done just in case; open the VIDEO_TS folder, open FixVTS, drag the VIDEO_TS folder on the FixVTS window, with all boxes unchecked, click Full DVD to process the VIDEO_TS files. When completed, cut and paste the backup out of the VIDEO_TS folder. Then I'd like to see the VIDEO_TS files, the freshly processed ones on the HDD, opened in DVD Shrink to see if they will go through analysis.

I suspect the PgcEdit method with the PSL2 plugin will work if the directions are followed. If you would supply the links for the complete guide you gave me a while back, we'd appreciate it. I misplaced those. If he doesn't get it using DVD Decrypter ripping in File mode with AnyDVD 5.9.4.1, the PgcEdit method should be tried, following the complete instructions. With everyone suggesting different modes, I forgot to mention the one I'd like seeing used first. IFO is handy for tracking down the problem files, but File is the handiest for editing. As we've seen, ISO is merely a more universal burn format.

If the methods we suggest don't work, then I suspect the condition of the disk.

LOL Anyone that can read is as good as I am. The only trick to using AnyDVD is keeping it updated. The info window merely gives what protection is found on the DVD and a bit of other relevant info. Some important things such as file compliance aren't given though. AnyDVD alludes to the problem when structure correction is mentioned, but that still doesn't tell the user if the files are compliant for processing. FixVTS was added for the compliance issues. When in doubt, I prefer the redundant step of using FixVTS again (or VobBlanker).

If by chance you want to try PgcEdit + PSL plugins + DVD Decrypter route, then go here http://www.k-probe.com/backup-movies-DVDDecrypter-PgcEdit-VobBLan...
I wrote that guide for those that needed or interested and or those that doesn't have AnyDVD.

Just follow the guide wisely and you'll be fine. Or you can try my "DVDFAB Decrypter + VobBlanker" method, for more info click on the bold link under my sig. However, if you have tried these 2 methods already and it failed to rip and backup, then it is definitely a bad pressed original disc. I primarily used these 2 methods to backup any new released or old dvds/movies and I've never experienced any issues at all.

Good luck!!

Appears we're in agreement there as well as the methods. The PSL2 method is pretty much a sure thing. However, I've been able to do the troublesome backups using AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter and using FixVTS whenever I ran into compliance issues. It's nice to have the PSL2 method in reserve though, just in case.

BroBear and others,

The DVD is brand new. So I don't think it's poor condition. However clone DVD reports that the DVD is dirty. Which isn't the case. I'm beginning to think it's a bad press of the dvd or something.

At any rate, I've had some success going at the problem another way. I downloaded a trial of Blindwrite 5. I used it to make an exact image of the dvd. The image plays just fine when mounted in Daemon Tools. The problem I'm now having is getting Dual Layer media which will work in my Lite-on 1213S drive. So far I've tried Memorex and Verbatim. My drive doesn't recognize either brand. I'm hoping once I find something that works, I'll be all set.

that's odd use decrypter to tell us what your drives capabilities are and make sure you are using a supported format ie...-r/+r/rw
imo throw the memorex away stick to the verb's!
have you updated the firmware lately??
here's a link for your firmware newest seems to be in decemberodds are you'll need it!
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces

on a side note I wonder if you can open the disk image through shrink to compress now use file>>open disk image to browse for your file see if you are still getting errors I don't know how Blindwrite deals w/ i/o's or if it just copies what it sees you may have the same prob's w/ the image!

I have a 1213 that I upped to a 1653 with CSOT and that way it's hip to alot more media and burns a lot better. If you don't mind losing your warranty which is probably gone on that old a model anyway it will do alot better and might help with your problems and like the guy said stick with verbs for your dl needs.

L8ter,

According to Nero Infotool my Lite on Drive will write to either DVD-R DL or DVD+R DL. However when I check run decrypter drive capabilities it says I have no dual layer write capabilities. Based on the fact that I can't seem to get any media to work in the drive I'm inclined to believe Decrypter. I did a firmware update last week when I was grasping at straws trying to backup this darn DVD. When I bought the drive I was told it was a dual layer burner. I guess I was told wrong!

DVD Skrink doesn't support the B5T File extension Blindwrite creates. So I mounted it with Daemon Tools to try out DVD Shrink like you asked. It still gives me a DVD navigation error.

Like I said if you up it to a 1653 you will have double layer capabilities and good ones at that. It's simple to do with the codeboys firmwares. codeguys.rpc1.org
