Hi Would you all recommend me getting the 200 pk of Taiyo Yuden 4x Silver DVD-R's for $54 w/ free shipping or get the 100 pk of 16x branded Verbatim DVD-Rs for about $20 after adding shipping and after rebates? thanks!

OH, these are availible at http://www.meritline.com/

THanks

i PERSONALLY can't stand rebates, but either choice would be just fine...but, if you feel the rebate is worth it to get media very inexpensively, then go for it~ :)

both media (TY and Verbatim) are very good quality, but you should also consider that with the newer 16x rated media, your firmware MUST be up to date in order to use them properly; while this is not a big deal, most people that are starting out with new media, i would suggest using the 8x rated ones first to "test" and see how your burner likes them before moving onto the 16x rated media..this is only a suggestion, as i do not know what burner you are currently using and the firmware you currently have on it...

lemme know and i can give you a more accurate reply (if i have experience with your particular burner of course)...

docTY~

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Hmm, a choice between Cindy Crawford or Adriana Lima, Tough call, but someone's gotta do it.

Either one will be fine.Just out of curiosoty, which burner do you have? How fast will it burn? I wouldn't recommend buying media rated at a higher speed than your burner..

I'm not sure how to check what firmware I have. The driver is from 7/1/2001 and the version is 5.1.2535.0 I probably should need to update it, being that I don't even know what it would be... thanks!

Your Sony should be fine, couldn't find it listed on the Sony support page so I assume that it is a fairly new drive. I own a DRU-800A and love it. Handles anything I throw at it.

Great, thanks.. so which of the 2 would you recommend - the TY 4X or the Verbatim 16X?

Go with the TY's.
The reason is because I 've had more screw ups w/ Verbs. than any other media I've bought. (disclaimer: the only two media brands I buy are Sony MIJ and Verb. Advanced Azo) I bought some Sony MIJ's when I first started burning DVDs, and never had a bad burn. The ratio was like 0/100! As opposed to the verb.'s I've got a 50 pk. that I'm not close to getting through, and yet already had to throw away 3 DVD's.

I use both as a matter of fact, currently have 4 types of disks and all work great, Fuji 8X DVD+R, MIJ (TYG002) TYG001 4X DVD-R, Ritek 8X G-04, and Verbatim DVD-R 16X. Putting a gun to my head, buy the Taiyo Yuden 4X due to the lack of a rebate. From my understanding, they seem to run out of 4X and will susbtitute the 8X for the same price. (As heard on the boards at AfterDawn)
