Ive just purchased the LG External USB2 LG4167 dvd writer and have a new Dell Pentium 4 pc with about 40GB hard drive, 512MB RAM, ON Win XP

I have the DVD Shrink and DVD Fab software as well as the Nero 6 Suite 3 bundled software loaded.

All installed last night, took Polar Express DVD to make a copy and all went fine until the Nero burn stage and after approx 2 hours it had only done 15% progress in which i aborted the burn.

The disc was a DVD + RW 4X but the burn speed showed as 2.4 x in Nero.

What did i do wrong and how long should it take approx to burn a 4.7GB DVD ??

Try updating you burner's firmware (I believe your exact model# is a GSA-1467B, if so use the link below to get the update if needed).

http://us.lgservice.com/gcsc/b2c/hpi/main

If that link is giving you trouble, you can get to it from here
http://us.lge.com/support/index.jsp

goto:driver downloads--DVD-ROM(writer), at bottom of page look for GSA_4167B firmware.

You should be using nero6 version 6.6.0.18, if not get the update form the links provided. Just install over what ever version you already have.

http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe

Use good quality stuff to burn on (look for media made in japan), try to use DVD+R or -R media not +/-RW, and try to stick to a write speed of 4X(no greater than 8X).

How long it should take depends on burner speed, write speed specified, rated speed of the media, quality of the media (you get the picture). It usually takes me about 7 minutes to burn a 4.3GB file to disk at 6X speed, at 4x it's about 15 minutes..

First you have to uninstall your existing version of Nero6 and then re install the version quoted.

I would also check to see if your DMA has not gone into PIO mode, go here for a guide.

@gwendolin,

I'm now using nero7, but when I was using the hell out of version 6, I always installed new versions over the old ones with no problems at all. If and only if I was having issues with a previous version did I first uninstall the old and then install the new one.

So no, you don't really have to uninstall the old version before the new one can be installed.

It is my understanding that the updating to newer bug free version will NOT remove bugs from previous version. All you are doing is adding any updates to the CORRUPTED version, check with alkohol if you wish confirmation

you have answered your own question, the older version is BUGGY and needs removing.
This is what I WILL be recommending.

Yes, but you're assuming that there maybe something corrupt with the version your upgrading from. What I'm saying is that there is no reason to uninstall the old version if there's nothing buggy about it and simply wish to update.

Not sure a bout this statement "updating to newer bug free version will NOT remove bugs from previous version", but if the software is acting incorrectly, I would agree that an uninstall of it first is the best thing to do.

Updates are suppose to fix the bugs (or sometimes create new ones).

Installation instructions from nero's site state:
*******************************************************************
How to download and install the latest updates for Nero?

Once the download starts, you will be asked what you want to do. Open the file, Save it or Cancel the action.
Please proceed as follows:

Select ?Save?.
Then you will be asked where to save the file. Please choose a folder that will let you find the file easily. For example ?My Documents? or ?Desktop?.
Note:
You do not have to save the files in the Nero folder.
When the download is finished, please install the downloaded files by double-clicking them. The install assistant will guide you through the installation process.

You are not instructed to uninstall anything before the udate is applied.
