Freeware, I recommend dvdx. http://www.labdv.com/dvdx/
Shareware, I recommend DVD Ripper Platinum, which supports ripping DVD to almost all video and audio formats. Check the guide in my sign.

As "philraz" asked, what exactly do you want to do?
Your question was a generic one. Later posts offered specific information on programs that you may not be looking for.
Please be more precise and you will get the help you want.
I would also like to say to fellow members, "he asked about free programs". DVD Ripper Platinum is not a free program.

I would like to change to DVIX. Doesn't MPEG-2 give the highest quality so I would also like to convert to MPEG-2.

Ok to change a dvd to divx using freeware first rip your dvd with dvd decrypter using ifo mode using stream processing under tools options set ifo mode file splitting to none load the resulting vob into virtualdub mod and save avi under file, setting your compresion type divx xvid etc
dvd vobs are already mpeg 2 dvd compliant files

you may try Cucusoft DVD to iPod Converter
it supports DVD to DivX

thanks for helping me convert to dvix, but I also want to do rip movies that will be the same quality as the origanal, is MPEG-2 the best format for this?

the VOB you extracted with decrypter is already a mpeg 2
