Excuse the blatent ad, I'm sure the mods will remove this thread if its deemed inappropriate.
http://i'manidiot.net edited by ddp is a new site offering MP4 content. The selection is limited at the moment as the site is still somewhat work-in-progress but new items are being added all the time.

No more so than the gazillion threads on these forums.
It legal to make a backup copy of any DVD you own. Its illegal to sell the software to do this (if the DVD is copyright protected). It is not illegal to own said software. It is not illegal to have that backup copy in MP4 format.

the law on copies of DVDs you own is grey at best.
downloading stuff you dont own is deffinitely illegal
it isnt illegal to sell the software - its what the end user does with said software that is illegal
so with the points you made and the ones i have just made
you can vet this will be deleted
plus this is blatant spam

The law is very black and white on the matter of backing up DVDs you own. It is 100% legal.
Nothing on the site is available for download. Law definately prevents that.
You're wrong over the bit about selling "ripping" software, at least in the US. Its what brought about the demise of 321Studios and others.
Yeah, I know the post was spam, apologies. But looking at some of the other content on here, it didn't seem too out of place. There's always people who like to have stuff done for them... for every Do-It-Yourself'er there's a dozen Buy-It-Yourself'ers.

I was on an ebay forum earlier, talking about the guys who are selling lost and 24 in mp4 on ebay. I was asking the legality of this, with regards to the buyer and seller both owning the original dvd and the cost only being for conversion, and found out that in the UK...drumroll.....
Its illegal to copy any DVD even for backup purposes. Which sucks.
This is different in the US though, I believe you can copy a DVD but not if it involves cracking CSS? But I may be wrong, i have read a lot of conflicting things online tonight.
USA Factory 1.5 > 2.71 SE-C > 3.03 OE-C, 4GB Sandisk + 1GB Sandisk, D-Pad Mod, SNES 9x_TYL 0.4.2, DGEN 1.70, NesterJ 1.11, DDR Mix V.1, PSP Revolution v.03 Anime, currently playing - Tony Hawk's Project 8, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, WSC 2007

i do try,
@radge
although everyone knows Quote: The ability to create copies of the media you've purchased for personal use is a long-accepted facet of the fair-use doctrine in U.S. copyright law
the DMCA state Quote: However, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) states that it's illegal to break the CSS copy-protection mechanism employed by most commercial DVD movies
which means you can only really copy stuff you created yorself,
how many dvd's/movies/music. have you seen without copyright protection?
this is why i say the area is grey
the copyright protection act regarding movies/music will always be grey because - yes it is ok to copy dvds/cds of yur own - but it certainly isnt legal to download them - even if you own an original copy of it (correct me if i am wrong
also there are still programs being sold and even freeware that take out copyright protection - if there all illegal why havn't tehy all been banned?
p.s
also, if by your own emmision ripping copy protected dvds is illegal- how can you sell mp4 rips of them

I never said it was illegal to rip a copy-protected DVD. I said it was prohibited to sell software that allows someone to do so. Subtle difference.
Anyways, I've done some more digging and apparantly the law was changed in 2003 with an update to the 1988 laws. At the present moment, it is illegal to backup any CD/DVD that contains copyrighted material regardless of whether the CD/DVD contains CSS protection or not. Bugger. A further amendment to the law is planned which will see the UK bring in laws along the lines of the DMCA.
Again, bugger.
