I have been also having problems with skipping and freezing. I have tried all sorts of different media's, as well as burning speeds. Isnt 4x the speed to burn at? or should i even go slower? Is there a limit on how slow or fast to go?

Yes 4X is usally a good starting point. Most likey it's going to be Media or firmware. Those are the leading cause of freezing I believe (at least media is?). We're going to need more info if you want a more precise answer:

1. What media are you using?
2. Burner?
3. Firmware?
4. Process you're trying?
5. DVD's your having problems with?
6. Computer specs?

Download Dvdinfopro (free) to gather some of the info you may not know:

I have been switching between Fuji and TDK finding that both types freeze, so i kind of think media isnt the problem. I use DVD Shrink and Img Burn and have been using 4x for the burn speed. If i understand what firmware is, then it is a windows XP IBM think pad. My process is i usually re-author the movie to save compression rateings. Then after the shrinking process is done, i find the movie in the designated folder i saved it to, then right click it and it gives me the option to burn using Img burn. Then i make sure the speed is 4x, and then burn it. It sometimes seems like i can watch the movie after i burn it at least once or twice, then it starts to freeze half way through the movie the next time i try to watch it. I kind of wonder if my DVD player has anything to do with it? Any other suggestions or comments? It happens to just about every movie i do. I am currently switching to a 6x speed and am going to try a few that way...so far this movie isnt freezing up yet.

You'll need to let us know what burner you are using? You can use dvdinfopro or dvdidentifer to find out what type of burner you're using, your latest firmware, and the media id. Both programs are free. I know for sure that TDK isn't considered top grade media, depending on what Fuji's your using - it's questionable. If your firmware isn't up to date, than that can be a big problem. If you are multitasking while burning, that is a big no-no.

Your burner should be in the top white pull down box, write down everything in that box.

Then click on on the tab that resembles your media +/- (plus or minus R). Then click identify. This should give you the Manufactuer id and Media id. Write that down and post it back.

TDK is considered terrible media. MIT Fuji isn't the worse, but I wouldn't use it. MIJ Fuji is great though.

If the disc is freezing while playing in your player it's most likely either the media or the player. Maybe one is not compatible with the other. Make sure the primary player can handle whatever format DVD you have (the + or -). I'd suggest the + because the booktype can be set to Rom.

But yeah, open DVDInfoPro, and like the previous poster said, from the drop down menu on the top, select whatever drive you use to burn so that we know what's up. Also, to kill two birds with one stone, put the burned DVD disc into that drive and then post the results.

The white pull down box says:
Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-8305

The manufactor name is: [Ritek Corp]
The manufactor ID is: RITEKF1

Anything else?

Okay it looks like you are probably using a Laptop that is probably a Toshiba. I've tried to find upgraded firmware for you, but couldn't for your model. Firmware helps determine compatability of the media with your burner. If your burner is an older model, and your media is newer, then compatability can come into play. Also keep in mind that multi-tasking, other software running, etc. can also cause similiar issues.

Now for the bad part. The media you are using is really not the greatest. I believe the RITEKF1 are Ritek non branded media and TDK will probably code out as TYG02. Not the best, but burnable. They can however lead to skipping, freezing, and pixalation especially if your burner isn't compatable. Even if you get a good burn with them, the longevity is a big question mark. They may work now, but a year from now it's 50/50.

As to the Mashita and your's being in a laptop(?), I'm going to have to defer to some better minds. I believe Maxburn had one once, but I'm thinking most are going to say to try better media. If you live in the states, than you can find Sony DVD+R's made in Japan 50-pcks for $14.99 right now. Those are coding out as TY's, one of the top 2 media's on the market.

Keep in mind DVD's are not like CD's. They are far more sensitive and picky than CD's.

Good luck!

EDIT Are these + or - and what type of dvd player are you trying to use them in? Here is a link to check the compatability of your dvd player to your media:

EDIT2 Download Dvdinfopro (free) to gather some of the info you may not know, click on the PI/PO test and post those results:

Thanks for your help thus far....I think multi tasking might be my main problem. As far as media is concerned, you are thinking with my lap top computer the best media for me would be sony DVD-R? My last question would be burn speed. If i burn at a slower speed, could that maybe take away some of the chances of my movies freezing?

P.S. I have always been using DVD -R's for media, i heard they are the most compatable for most DVD players, and my DVD player is an Emerson DVD, VCR combo, model number EWD2203. Buying a better quality DVD player might also help me out dont ya think?

Here is your Emerson model:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid=3639&Search=Sea...

A better dvd player could or could not help out. For example if you are burning on -R's and you get a Samsung, I have heard they like +R better. So it may not play at all. I would normally say get +R and booktype, but your burner won't do this, so yes -R is probably better in your situation. Do these things first:

1. I would try and see if burning at a slower speed and NO multitasking helps. That the cheapest thing to do.

2. If that doesn't help, than I would buy some Sony +/-R's (preferably Made In Japan) from Best Buy since they're on sale this week. Don't pay more than $14.99 for a 50 pk. Try those at a slow burning speed. See more information on good quality media that's not expensive here:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/303931

If neither of those two things work out than we'll look at alternatives. Personally if you have a normal PC, I would buy a better burner (around $40 shipped) before I bought a new dvd player. Maybe someone else can find a firmware upgrade for your burner, but I couldn't. That could easily also be the issue. Keep us posted and good luck.
